Description

The Space Between Worlds is a 2020 science fiction novel by Micaiah Johnson. It is Johnson's debut novel. The novel takes place in the near future, where travel between parallel universes is possible. My favourite part about the book were all the different relationships and the sisterhood between Cara and Esther was a delight to read about. Esther is one of the best secondary characters I’ve ever read as she is strong in her quiet way, polite and kind, but also brilliant and ruthless when the need arises. She’s the kind of person who will always be there for the people she loves, regardless of how hard it is.

Multiverse travel is finally possible, but there’s just one catch: No one can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive. Enter Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be exceptionally good at dying—from disease, turf wars, or vendettas they couldn’t outrun. Cara’s life has been cut short on 372 worlds in total. It’s an interesting concept; that there are many versions of us out there and the smallest difference can have the biggest result. Adding the brutal desert wastelands with metal-clad vehicles being used as weapons and it’s almost like Sliding Doors meets Mad Max. EVEN WORTHLESS THINGS can become valuable once they become rare. This is the grand lesson of my life. (c) As a result, the Loth-wolves within the painting shifted away from the gods and moved in a circle together, which formed the portal to the realm. However, the portal to the World Between Worlds was closed if a Force-wielder placed their hand on the Son's encircled fist, which prompted the painting of the Father to conceal the entryway and the temple itself. [1] History [ ] Ezra Bridger’s visit [ ] Ahsoka episode 4 "Part Four: Fallen Jedi" ends with Ahsoka Tano trapped in a mysterious world, which will have significant ramifications for the second half of the series. This ethereal realm is crucial to Star Wars lore and opens many possibilities for Ahsoka's story, especially now that she has encountered the spirit of her former master, Anakin Skywalker. Ahsoka last saw him on Malachor when he was still Darth Vader, and while she will have learned of his redemption, the two never got to make amends while he was alive. Their reunion in Ahsoka is an opportunity fifteen years in the making.I also couldn't connect with any of the characters. Their motivations, feelings, and actions all remain a mystery to me. In particular, Cara's simultaneous blend of cynically detached while also angsty philosophical narrative tone did not work for me, and came across as very naïve and immature. Also, what kind of names are Nik Nik and Mr. Cheeks? I kept thinking I'm reading about a toddler and his pet instead of an emperor and his runner. So, once again, I loved the post apocalyptic world where this was set and the idea of Wiley City and Ashtown -two different systems of governing (one with politicians who pose as civil and one with a tyrannical emperor who rules via fear)- but I wanted more, especially about the Emperor and Ashtown. I always got the sense that if somebody else had gone into that World Between Worlds, they would have experienced something completely different. They would have heard different voices echoing, the portals would have been different, so it's all about what you bring into it and what your experiences are and what your connections are." ― Henry Gilroy [10] A gritty, riveting, and ultimately hopeful novel about the people, choices, and relationshipsthatmake us who we are—in this world, and in those we can only imagine.” —Kameron Hurley, Hugo and Locus award–winningauthor of The Light Brigade Additionally, there wasn't much science in this "science fiction" novel. It was mostly politics and philosophy, and I got tired of wading through all the stressful push and pull, never uncovering the cool tech and science. Science wasn't even an afterthought. It never explained the 'how' behind the amazing multi-world travel that was going on, only that it was "figured out" by this guy. *sigh*

Also known as the Vergence Scatter (per the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary), the World Between Worlds’ translucent pathways react like water when someone walks on them. At the end of those pathways are portals that can transport travelers across both short and vast physical distances. Star Wars‘ World Between Worlds can also move people through time. What Are Loth-Wolves’ Connection to the World Between Worlds? Lucasfilm And it's not just the worldbuilding, but the writing as a whole. It feels fragmented and random. Sentences, paragraphs, and scenes don't logically follow from previous ones. Even dialogues don't really make sense. It's as if the author had written monologues for each speaker, then just interweaved their lines together and called it a conversation. If you love sci-fi and dystopian novels then set a reminder for 04 August because you are going to want to get this book. The story has a distinct Mad Max flavour to it, and I had to force myself to not finish it in one day. The writing is utterly brilliant and I couldn’t stop marvelling at how simple yet powerful the writing was. The little paragraph at the beginning of each part comparing the way people of the scientific world and spiritual world saw things was so fascinating. If you land on an earth where you are still alive the universe turns you inside out, leaving a bloody heap where you used to be.

Like Gandalf, Ahsoka also knows why true evil must never gain access to power no one should have. Why Is the World Between Worlds So Dangerous in the Star Wars Universe? Still, all that can be overlooked if the plot made sense. But it doesn't. It feels like there are multiple separate stories in here instead of one coherent one. And they were all just mashed up together in the most convoluted and haphazard way possible. If I had to classify it, I'd say it was kind of a YA multiverse Mad Max for people of color. I'm all for finding badass brown gals to relate to in my books. However, this one didn't ring true. No sonorous tone, but rather an awful clanging with each new odd name (Nik Nik?) or contrived political hurdle. Loth-wolves saved rebels on Lothal by moving them halfway across the planet in a moment via the World Between Worlds. (Initially, no human rider remembered or understood exactly what had happened.) Lucasfilm There is something gratifying about going places where I’m dead and touching things I was never even meant to see. (c)

All of which raises an obvious question without a clear answer. Is the World Between Worlds Star Wars Time Travel? Lucasfilm Nyame: goddess of the planets and dark. It's supposedly her who gives the traversers kisses (with teeth) / beatings. (Kidding! That's not precisely so.)A lot of comparing oneself with other people happens (no, this is not an examination of privilege or belonging, this is an illustration of personal insecurities, lead either by social issues experience or by pretty much any other stuff): a b Heath, Will (9 November 2020). "The Space Between Worlds review: Sci-fi with the multiverse done right". New Scientist . Retrieved 1 October 2023. The overall rating: we start at 5 stars since I loved this one and finished it and enjoyed it a lot (even with all my grumbling!). Had there been no this twist, this would've been another dreary parallel-worlds-based read. But this! This twisty made it all so much more stand out!

The World Between Worlds, in ways we don’t yet (and might never) fully know, is just like the Force itself. It can be used for either knowledge or destruction. It’s neither inherently good or bad; the people who use its power determine that. No wonder Filoni has said “One of the things [Palpatine] knows about it” is that it provides an opportunity for him to control “through time and space, different events through the Force.” Inside the World Between Worlds Ezra saw Morai—a convor bird that frequently accompanied Ahsoka Tano—above a portal. A similar (the same?) convor bird was also in the painting of the Mortis gods on Lothal. It sat atop the Daughter’s shoulder. Lucasfilm star: Caramenta, Caralee, Nelline… all of these are the parallels of our MC. Well, the one we're looking at is Caralee but hush, that's a secret. Love this twist. The Space Between Worlds is a concept album that follows the story of a huntress who travels the infinite metaphysical worlds brought into being by the dreams of humankind. In these realms, she encounters a dream eater which threatens to unravel the fabric of reality by devouring dreamers and destroying the dimensional gateways. With that territory comes a complicated tale of identity: Cara’s entire existence is a traumatic one, given her entry into the new world, her efforts to fit in with her co-workers and family, along with the knowledge that in most worlds, she’s died in horrific ways because of the systematic ways of the worlds that she inhabits.

The Space Between Worldsis a riveting and detailed parallel universe sci-fi novel with a lot to say about fortune, privilege and belonging.” —Dr. Alice Violett The New York Times praised The Space Between Worlds, calling it "profoundly satisfying" and a metaphor for neoliberal imperialism. [2] New Scientist said it was a "witty, deep and savvy tale about traveling through the multiverse", comparing it to Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter's The Long Earth and Luiza Sauma's Everything You Ever Wanted. [3] The Nerd Daily praised the spiritual convictions of the traversers, and their belief in the "goddess Nyame who guides them across different universes, that it is she who they feel in that space between worlds". [5] Awards [ edit ] This is a world where multiverse travel is common knowledge. A total of 382 parallel earths have been documented but traversing between worlds is a little like playing Russian roulette, every time you travel could be the one that kills you. He thinks if I study the figures and look for patterns the way analysts do, I’ll be valuable to the company for more than my mortality rate. (c)
