Their stories come together in unexpected ways - sometimes very funny, sometimes very sad - and their friendship grows slowly over the course of the book. I am truly a massive Sophie White fan now, I can't wait to read her other works and see what comes next!

She doesn’t want to be the party girl she was, but now she’s just a mum and girlfriend and completely alone. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Once more, there was that awful laughter… as the devil had somehow arrived in the room, only to whizz out of shot, a puff of smoke and silky cape, a shape disappearing through a window.

I also like how the author mentions her own struggles in the notes at the end and that at the start and end of the actual book contains information to helplines if needed. All 3 women are feeling discintinctly off-kilter in their lives, and most importantly, like their friends have abandoned them.Joanne has just had a baby, the first of her friends to do so and her life is suddenly very different to that of her friends.

After she becomes a mum for the first time though, her friends can’t relate to how her life has changed and disappear just when she needs them. Joanne a new mum and the first of her friends to have a baby, but her pals keep forgetting that she's no longer available for tequila-fuelled nights out, and Claire is the nanny who's Whatsapp chat with her old school friends is ominously quiet these days, which can only mean one thing - a side group without her. Every main character is an absolute gem and I so enjoyed reading how they realised their current surroundings weren't actually benefitting them. There is also razor sharp social commentary about podcasting/ influencing interlaced throughout the narrative and the book continues in this vein until the final quarter. White tackles the topics of new motherhood, changing friendships and mental illness amongst other remarkably well.It felt a little busy, with elements that aren't explored as much as they could be (Claire's parents are separated but still resentfully sharing a house, thanks to the desperate housing market; Joanne's mates sort of vanish, which is fitting for them but also there's not even an attempt from any of them at understanding the motherhood thing). And Lexi - well, Lexi is living the dream, hosting a podcast with her childhood bestie that's riding high at the top of the charts.

I recently heard one of those rare Republican never-Trumpers, Adam Kitzinger, talking on the Bill Maher show, about how his family had decided he was the devil for having turned on Trump. I could see something of myself in all of the characters at varying times as I read on, and I think it’s the sort of story that will resonate with so many of us. We get fully absorbed in their life, their thoughts, their feelings and we quickly feel passionately happy, sad and outraged on their behalf. This book has heart, soul, and insight, weaving themes of mental illness, friendship, and the strange liminality that is your late 20s/early thirties seamlessly.Looking through the lens of family, motherhood, mental illness and just general Irish craic, she so brilliantly summarises the overlooked heartbreak of questioning whether the people around really care about you, and whether they want you around. White uses a light comedic touch while building and diffusing tension page by page as she dives headlong into the pitfalls of influencer culture, mental illness, shame, loneliness, motherhood and more. It’s slow moving, but leisurely and never loses its entertaining pace — watching relationships grow and break in real time, and of course some increasingly absurd adventures and antics that made my face ache from smiling.
