Light roasts tend to have more caffeine, while dark roasts will have less. Medium roasts will usually be somewhere in the middle. Why Drink Medium Roast Coffee? A medium roast has a pronounced flavor, but it won’t be too bitter. It has a toasted flavor and is typically well-balanced and smooth.

McDonald’s doesn’t standardize the amount of caffeine in their coffee. As an estimate, a small cup of brewed coffee contains 109 mg of caffeine. Where it gets more complicated however, is if you compare the different roasts by scoop, not by weight. In weight terms, caffeine content is identical regardless of the roast levels. If you measure scoop by scoop, you will find that a light roast has a touch more caffeine than darker variants. This is because light roast beans are denser than dark beans as density decreases with roasting. The difference between lighter and medium roast coffee is barely noticeable and even between light and dark roasts, it is still negligible. What is the difference between medium and dark roast coffee? To be at the level of a dark roast the internal temperature is between 464-482 degrees Fahrenheit. The body of the beans can become thin by the end. A few of the names associated with dark roast are Italian roast, french roast, Spanish roast, New Orleans roast, espresso roast, and continental roast. The dark roast will typically be used for espresso drinks, or other drinks that need cream or milk added. Micro-lot single-origin coffee beans are even more localized: they usually refer to a single field at the farm or a small range of altitudes.

Medium roast roasts end up having more of a medium brown color when finished brewing. They also have more of a body to the cup compared to light roasts. This just means it’s a little less clear of the light. Similar to light roast, medium roast beans don’t have oil on them. Even though there is a similarity between the oil you’ll see on the beans, there are a few differences between the two. The roasting temperature for a dark roast is between 464°F – 482°F. There are visible oils on dark roast beans. Typically you cannot taste any origin flavors in a dark roast, just the effects the roasting process has on that type of coffee bean. The temperature in the roasting drum is now reduced, while the beans need to heat up. They increase in temperature as they’re exposed to the heat in the drum, reaching a point where the temperature stops cooling and starts to increase. This is the moment that most roasters refer to as the turning point , represented on the bottom of the curve in the graph. It’s important to remember the coffee beans are getting hotter throughout the whole process, even though it might not look like that on the graph. One cup of brewed coffee (8 oz) contains about 70–140 mg of caffeine, or about 95 mg on average ( 1, 2). Espresso Although espresso has more caffeine per volume than regular coffee, it usually contains less per serving, since espresso servings tend to be small.

The most common coffee roasts are light, medium, and dark (and sometimes extra dark). Of course, many roasters have specialty names for their flavor roasts as well, such as Breakfast Roast or French Roast. Think of these as marketing terms rather than roast styles.
