That's when I floated another color or another wash over that for a darker center. These nice yellow dots in the middle will show through. Plan your painting before you get started. Consider doing a light pencil sketch to properly plan your painting and identify where you want to preserve whites using liquid masking fluid. And get rid of that little spot that I had. You don't want to try to wipe it while it's still wet or you'll have a big smear across your watercolor. So if you make a mistake where you, you put a line down that you don't want, dry it and then peel it off. So the rest I'm gonna leave on there. Actually, I think I'm going to peel off one of these lines as well. A bit of advice – don’t use your best brushes for applying masking liquid. This stuff can ruin them. The best brushes I’ve found for this purpose are synthetic brushes. They have the advantage of keeping a nice pointed head and they clean up more easily than other types of hair (some artists recommend using old brushes, but if they can’t form a good point then they’re no good for precision work). Don’t try to speed up the drying time of your art masking fluid using heat or sunlight. Masking fluid contains latex rubber and can cook easily when exposed to heat. If this happens it will become very difficult to remove at a later stage.

Liquid frisket is just another name for masking fluid, the same latex-based fluid used to prevent paint from getting onto certain areas. All those yellow spots are really standing out now. So you can use masking fluid over painted watercolor paper. These are the kind of things used for calligraphy and they’re pretty inexpensive. I find these work quite well and have a good level of precision. Really simple to use and easy to clean because you just pull the latex off when dry. 4. Winsor & Newton Art Masking Fluid

The time you can safely keep the masking fluid on the paper depends on a number of factors, including the brand, external temperature, and paper. Arches NOT paper is the most robust to deal with masking techniques. 4. How do I apply masking fluid?

So to summarise; becoming good at masking is crucial to becoming a great modeller. Take your time in this stage and the results will be obvious. As above there are quite a few ways to approach it, but give them all a go (masking bits are fairly cheap!) and use what works best for you and the kits you build.Using a masking fluid pen will be similar to using a paintbrush to apply masking fluid, only you do not want to dip your pen/marker into soapy water to prevent it from gumming up. Instead, you can use a rag or paper towel to wipe off the nib or tip whenever it becomes gummed up. You may need to shake the marker or prime the nib before use but this will depend on the brand.

Pay attention to the stated drying times and be sure to apply it thinly in multiple layers to save yourself this hassle. How long masking fluid takes to dry can depend on a number of factors, such as the brand, the environment you’rein and the paper you're painting on. Don’t try to speed up the drying process of either the masking fluid or subsequent washes with the use of a hot hairdryer. If you use a hairdryer, keep it very gentle. How long can you leave masking fluid on?

First and foremost don’t have too much paint on the brush – You want to avoid the paint flowing under the tape. Remember that masking fluid applied on top of a previously painted area will very likely lift off some of the paint when removed. You can limit the amount of paint lifting by using at least artist-grade watercolor paints with higher staining power. Masking fluid can make a great contribution to your watercolor painting process. You can produce really beautiful effects by using masking fluid in a range of different ways. Not only is masking fluid great for watercolor painting, but it is versatile and can also be used with a range of other paint types.Never shake the bottle, as it will cause the product to lump and you might end up with tiny air bubbles in the fluid. Before you even begin, it is best to plan what you are going to do. Make sure you know where you want your highlights to sit or what areas you want the masking fluid to be. Draw a basic pencil sketch to create an outline of your work. You can then gather everything you require, which can include the following: Trying to speed up the drying process, for example, with a hairdryer, is not advisable as it can make it nearly impossible to lift off without damaging the paper.
