Drawing on solid scientific and psychological principles, he provides easy-to-follow organizational strategies, tips to maintain focus and create a distraction-free workspace, and tools to set goals, build a business plan, and discover the right project to keep you motivated. I recommend anyone interested in a better understanding of what ADHD really is, to read this book, and others like it, whether you have it or not, especially if you know someone that has it. Whilst there are several references to the US Health Service and the way it works with adhd patients it is a lot more than just an adhd book written by an American for Americans. The sections on meditation for ADHD and EEG biofeedback were sadly predictable, and presented a rather tired and superficial picture, especially as they didn't include any of the recent detailed and nuanced understandings of ADHD neurobiological correlates. Meanwhile, us inattentive types are still happily painting our caves; we’re considered an anomaly in the modern world.

As an entrepreneur, he's founded several successful businesses which still are operating, and lived and worked with his wife, Louise, and their three (now adult) children on several continents. And in this book he tells the entire tale of it, the struggles, the studies, the new ways of living he discovered, and what, other than outright medication, could work for others too. org), to create more awareness about inattentive ADHD and the need for early diagnosis and treatment. As someone with severe ADHD that went undiagnosed until mid 20s, this is extremely validating, albeit telling me what I already knew on some level. If you want an easy quick read then go for it but if you are looking for something more substantial then skip it.

Other studies suggest that, like Down’s Syndrome or muscular dystrophy, ADHD is a genetic disease, with the A1 variant of the D2 dopamine receptor gene identified by scientists as the leading candidate. this book is a wonderful, joyful educator and extreme tear jerker, be prepared to hear some very painful stories that you will likely empathise with and have possibly experienced. Providing a supportive ';survival' guide to help fine tune your natural skill set, rather than suppress it, Hartmann shows that each mind--whether hunter, farmer, or somewhere in between--has value and great potential waiting to be tapped. With the prevalence of Ritalin and other similar drugs, Chapter 16 examines the role of these drugs in treating ADHD. Positively affirms and validates ADHD 'hunter' types as giving an evolutionary advantage to our species of predominantly neurotypical 'farmer' types. I had come across the title in passing before, and always overlooked it as the premise didn’t resonate. There are perhaps a few parts that could have been broadened or deepened in context, but it's a well-rounded, affirming book on the topic. So much of the population is given this label that it’s almost inevitably something natural and not a disease.

Often highly creative and single-minded in pursuit of a self-chosen goal, those with ADHD symptoms possess a unique mental skill set that would have allowed them to thrive in a hunter-gatherer society. I felt by the end, what I got was a book with advertisements, and more than a few sections where the author got to say "I told you so! This behavior is often controlled with the prescription of Ritalin or other related drugs because the behavior can be very disruptive in the school classroom. I didn’t really feel like I learned anything from reading this book, though maybe for someone who had a negative mindset towards ADHD might find this a useful guide to understanding ADHD. it was a decent audiobook but the arguments werent conclusive for me on ADHD and it seemed as if she backpedaled on some arguments of the hunter vs farmer dichotomy. This book kind of falls apart near the end (in true ADD form), but it is still a thought provoking and insightful (if not outright revolutionary) read that anyone struggling with, living with, or in any relation to, someone with ADD or ADHD should not only read, but absorb. Again, Hartmann offers a number to strategies for the Hunter to find ways to sleep in the current Farmer’s world, strategies often hypnotic in nature. A bit repetitive in places but in my experience this approach has to be more productive in supporting people that find themselves struggling. As hunters, they would have been constantly scanning their environment, looking for food or threats (distractibility); theyd have to act without hesitation (impulsivity); and theyd have to love the high-stimulation and risk-filled environment of the hunting field. One disadvantage that I found especially interesting is that its long term use affects brain chemistry so that when going off Ritalin other problems surface.
