It can be used, across time and history and cultures, to brand women as vain and superficial while at the same time wearing make-up was a necessary part of women succeeding in society or the workforce. is a common refrain – she continues nonetheless, and by the time she reaches Ardrossan Academy, she acquires more outlets for her inner life.
