About this deal

As I went through the stories I kept thinking to myself “That was funny - it’s going to hard to top that”.

It’s a shame that this did not come out prior to Yauch’s passing, because it would have been great to read his perspective. Hotjar sets this cookie to know whether a user is included in the data sampling defined by the site's daily session limit. I gotta tell you, though, I legit lost my shit when I heard Wanda Sykes' voice come through my speakers.I love the homage they pay to everybody from Led Zeppelin to the Clash to Jackson Brown and especially to Run DMC. I also really like Amy Poehler's reviews of their videos chapter and Spike Jonze's chapter where he describes photos he took of the Beasties and every one of them is "the best photo ever".

And—I don’t know how I have not already said this—there are at least a hundred laugh-out-loud funny stories in this book. Each of the chapters are short stories about a time and place in beastie boys history as told by Mike D and AD-rock OR they are a completely absurd made up tale from an equally famous person. This is one of the only times I can think of where I'd recommend getting both the print and audio versions at once. It's easy to read in that sections are short, conversational and enhanced with beautiful photography. Alongside the band narrative you will find rare photos, original illustrations, a cookbook by chef Roy Choi, a graphic novel, a map of Beastie Boys’ New York, mixtape playlists, pieces by guest contributors, and many more surprises. as well as my next trip to NYC when I bore my family by seeking out the hidden landmarks from the book.

The book mostly-written by Adam Horovitz (Ad Rock) and Michael Diamond (Mike D) with contributions from all kinds of people who have been in and around the Beastie Boys camp over the years. Adam ‘AD-ROCK’ Horovitz and Michael ‘Mike D’ Diamond offer revealing and very funny accounts of their transition from teenage punks to budding rappers; their early collaboration with Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin; the almost impossible-to-fathom overnight success of their debut studio album Licensed to Ill; that album’s messy fallout; their break with Def Jam, move to Los Angeles, and rebirth as musicians and social activists, with the genre-defying masterpiece Paul’s Boutique. The stories are largely chronological but there are hardly any mentions of years or dates, making it hard to tell exactly when things are happening; the only real clues are the mentions of albums or songs. By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file. It’s full of the bullish, cheeky and frankly childish humour of the early Beasties with the talent, thoughtfulness and insight of the more mature output of the 90s and later.Dave who would later run into Yauch and had come out as trans but also had cancer and wanted to live out her days in the body she was meant to have. With classics such as Ted Hughes's The Iron Man and award-winners including Emma Carroll's Letters from the Lighthouse, Faber Children's Books brings you the best in picture books, young reads and classics. And I clearly remember hearing their song Sure Shot for the first time with its infamous MCA verse, "I want to say a little something that's long overdue / the disrespect to women has got to be through / To all the mothers and the sisters and the wives and friends / I wanna offer my love and respect till the end" and thinking to myself, 'They're growing up. Much humility - in that they recognized that they were very fortunate that things played out the way they did. You need to see the photos and hear the stories read both by Mike D and Ad-Rock as well as by a cast of unexpected others (Bette Midler.

They talk about not selling out, when their claim to fame seems to be lining up a whole lot of celebrities to read their half baked boring stories.

The heartfelt passages of Adam Horvitz and Michael Diamond's grief over the passing of their friend, band mate, and brother, Adam Yauch were prolific and meaningful.
