Bee has kept the estate going by turning the family stable into a profitable business and combining breeding, selling and training horses with riding lessons. There’s probably a sub-genre of books about coming back from apparently dead, though I can’t think any more at the moment. That said there is no viciousness in her attitude and the author comes across as a pleasant person who you would like to meet.

Brat Farrar had been brought up in an orphanage, and worked in ranches and stables in the United States, until he became an expert horseman. After two weeks of tutoring, Brat appears at the office of the Ashby family solicitor by saying he adopted the name "Brat Farrar" after he had run away.
