As the cuckoo sings out across the Lake District, life is about to change for ever for local boy Tommy and his friend Sally, the mysterious evacuee girl who lives on the neighbouring farm. Initially, the plot appears straightforward, but it is the relationship between Tommy and Sally which holds the magic to this story.

Bronnie is so lovely with the boys and we also felt that having a man enthusing about the books set a great example. The characters and setting stayed with me long after I'd finished reading the book and I know a lot of people are going to be talking about it. Jonathan Tulloch's writing takes you straight into the story's time, during WWII, and place; a small Lake District village. In fact the whole novel is seeped in local accents and Tulloch's ease with dialogue is a strong part of the book's appeal.

Cuckoo Summer is a perfect book to share alongside WWII topics, and it will be loved by any child looking for an immersive story of adventure and friendship. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Inspired by the stories the author heard about his mother’s childhood on a Lakeland farm and wartime events in the area Cuckoo Summer has an authenticity and a sense of time and place that ensures this historical fiction is credible. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. But there is plenty for teachers and adults to explore with readers, including underlying themes of prejudice and poverty. It seems Mr Scarcross has little time for his evacuee, and nor does Miss Gently or others in the community. The descriptions of the setting, the tarns and the wildflowers all bring the world to life as the reader is drawn into the adventure. Into this world his new friend Sally, an evacuee who lives on the neighbouring farm, appears like a breath of fresh air, full of jokes, chat and bravado, she is the type of child that others follow.
