Description

Thank you to Netgalley and the author Gareth Neame for giving me the privilege of an advance reader copy of this book. Afternoon tea is a revered and treasured English tradition—and no one knows better how to prepare and enjoy a proper tea than the residents of Downton Abbey. The exit drive was brilliant, it takes you out via another entrance so you get to see more of the estate.

By the early nineteenth century, tea drinking had been established and by the 1820s, the British East India Company began production in Assam using a local tea variety.Born from her eponymous award winning blog this book contains 160 unique recipes, all beautifully photographed by the author.

As tea was her temperance drink of choice, it gained social acceptance among the aristocracy as she replaced wine, ale and spirits with tea as the court drink. It covers different types of tea, curds, preserves and creams, and serving suggestions for accompaniments such as scones and biscuits, cakes and tarts, sandwiches and savoury bites. The Rivoli Bar was definitely the highlight of my trip, the rest of the hotel was cheap and felt tacky – the bar felt removed, intimate and secret which made it much more exciting than a large room filled with tourists and teacups. We only have limited space in our Afternoon Tea designated locations and, therefore, can only seat a table of up to 6 people, subject to availability.

Preserves and spreads - Make aromatic strawberry-rhubarb jam, currant jelly or lemon curd from scratch to accompany your bakes. Apparently, as a child, Queen Victoria wasn’t allowed sweet things very often, but during her reign a taste for teatime developed and a little sweet something to sustain the Queen and her guests in the late afternoon became “de rigeur”. Like the other books in the series, this volume contains full color photos of the recipes and from the TV series. The explanations are very well done, and each recipe gives a little information about the particular cake or pastry in the context of the times, together with little remarks bringing you right into the story.Preserves and spreads - Make aromatic strawberry-rhubarb jam, currant jelly or lemon curd from scratch to accompany your bakes. The series ended on such a positive and happy note but I was in tears just saying goodbye to all the wonderful characters. You will be given an opportunity to pre-check the availability of tables for Afternoon Tea before proceeding with your purchase of admission tickets.
