Even when they're not relying on easily recognisable tunes, their original material is powered by a raft of indelible hooks, especially the great "Fu-Gee-La". It not only catapulted the Fugees into stardom, but also launched the productive solo careers of Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill, the latter of whom already ranks as one of the top female MCs of all time based on her work here. We are grateful to Enya for her kindness and consideration in allowing us the use of her track "Song For Boadecia" taken from the album " The Celts" which appears on the song "Ready Or Not" which was initially used without her permission. Most versions of the album feature four bonus tracks, including three remixes of ""Fu-Gee-La"", and a short acoustic Wyclef Jean solo track entitled ""Mista Mista"".

The two both met and became involved with their significant others while in a relationship with each other. On their debut, the Fugees had sketched out a pattern similar to the multi-ethnic, edgy music on The Score, but they didn't deliver it with the authority that they do here. The album features a wide range of samples and instrumentation, with many aspects of alternative hip hop that would come to dominate the scene in the mid-late 90's. Rating: A, 3 Stars (out of 5) - "The Fugees are a Neapolitan treat, sweet in three layers: rhyme, sample, and groove. The massive hit on the record was ‘Killing Me Softly With His Song,’ a reimagining of the Roberta Flack hit.

The album features a wide range of samples and instrumentation, with many aspects of alternative hip hop that would come to dominate the hip hop music scene in the mid-late 1990s. In November 2021, death metal titans Hypocrisy released their 13th studio album 'Worship' to massive acclaim from fans and media ending up in the top ranks of many year’s end lists and scorring some. Lauryn Hill compared the album to The Who’s ‘Tommy,’ saying that “It's almost like a hip-hop version…like what The Who did for rock music. The Score's production was handled mostly by the Fugees themselves and Jerry Duplessis, with additional production from Salaam Remi, John Forté, Diamond D, and Shawn King.
