Not only does she have a killer to wrangle with, but she is also a teenage girl dealing with a health condition that can cause those around her to treat her as if she is of less than a clear mind. This was such a good read that I would recommend to readers new to reading YA thrillers and those interested in representation for cerebral palsy.

Living in a family of fostered children, all with their own issues, one day somebody tells her a secret. This is kind of my theory for why this strain of thought has persisted across generations: it’s a psychological pyramid scheme of sorts. The Secret actually requires that you never doubt yourself, never consider negative repercussions, and never indulge in negative thoughts. Here’s just one example of how the confirmation-bias-with-good-intentions strategy could go horribly wrong: Let’s say you are working on a cure for cancer and you think Drug X is the hot ticket.

They’re easy and make you feel good, but they also make you mentally fat and lazy—and emotionally, you die a much more painful death. You rationalize the negative results away because doubting yourself is tantamount to doubting The Universe, and no one fucks with The Universe. As Byrne puts it, “When you allow a thought of doubt to enter your mind, the law of attraction will soon line up one doubtful thought after another. There are so many valuable life lessons in this book about how to be kind to yourself, be strong, independent and most of all to look for the positive in any situation no matter how terrible. I’m sitting in the offices of Glen Oil’s headquarters in Glasgow, and as I glance at my reflection in the window, I look just like a top businesswoman. The premise of this book hooked me immediately: Jemma, a sixteen-year-old girl with severe cerebral palsy who cannot speak or move, learns the identity of a killer—from the killer himself. But for all our drama, we were inextricably linked—we had a daughter and deep, deep history together. We are able to imagine how a person might move through the world, how their family might operate, what their favorite foods might be, how their nation works, how their town works, and the smallest, most inconsequential aspects of their lives rise up to meet us at our desks.
