alice sun – as a former ib student and seeker of academic validation, she was a little too relatable. also, the title is absolutely genius and i never would've been able to come up with it myself, and the cover is stunning. As for characters, I didn't feel particularly strongly about them (sans Henry, who reminds me of a teenage version of Henry Golding's Nick Young from Crazy Rich Asians — though he is portrayed as near-perfect, with few flaws, if any).

I’ve spent my whole life longing to be seen, but I’ve come to realize that when people look too closely, they inevitably notice the ugly parts too, like how the tiny cracks on a polished vase only become noticeable under scrutiny. i don't know what ann liang puts in her books, but i could have read this in one setting if i hadn't stopped myself. And everything about this moment is so lovely and so fragile in its loveliness that I’m almost afraid to hold it. although the book was undeniably remarkable, it lacked the detailed explanations of how and why she acquired the power of invisibility.

There was little moments between them which I really enjoyed reading, but the only disappointing part was that I didn’t always feel connected to the characters, it did feel intermittent depending on the scene. The chemistry between these two is absolutely unmatched and the banter (mostly one-sided on Alice’s end) was so fun to read about! then we have alice who thinks they both hate one another when in reality henry never hated her AHH I LOVED THAT SCENE WHEN HE ADMITTED IT BYE. i 100% understood her burning desire for extremely high grades, and i related to a lot of her experiences and thoughts. As much as I want to gatekeep Henry🥹🥹, READ THIS BOOK RIGHT NOW IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE THAT CUTE, LIGHTHEARTED HIGH SCHOOL MAGIC.i firmly believe that Ann Liang has perfected the ya romance formula because i haved loved all of her books so far. I was initially quite interested in the concept of If You Could See the Sun, but the execution of its most compelling concepts — academic rivals to lovers, an interrogation of elite Beijing educational institutions, the supernatural element of invisibility — left me feeling incredibly jaded, leading to a rather half-hearted finish of the book. For plot specifics, Alice's invisibility was given no explanation, resolution, or imbuing of improbability.
