About this deal

The lion takes them on a wonderful tour of the city taking in such sights as The Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and the London Eye!

Many of his books have a cultural agenda and James is passionate about introducing children to art, music, opera, ballet and traditional tales. Alongside his work in publishing, James has devised and performed in a hugely successful series of concerts for children, combining live classical music, storytelling and live art.He has also created designs and illustrations for the Kirov Mariinsky Opera of St Petersburg and in 1994 won the New York Times award for one of the ten best illustrated books on the year (The Boy and The Cloth of Dreams). To link this book to drama you could split the class into small groups and they could do freeze frames of the main events of the fire. as long as you have a ready excuse for why the Trafalgar Square Lion isn't waking up to fly you around the city any time soon! Not everyone will be acquainted with London and its famous sighs, children new to London will enjoy it, children who have visited these sights will enjoy revisiting them through this story, and a class teacher could use it as an introduction to a visit into central London. We have all extracted joy from the notion that one of the lions at the base of Nelson's column comes to life and carries Katie all over the place.

It can be used in so many ways in English including adjectives, speech and diary writing for example, and also as a cross-curricular resource in Geography (capital cities and landmarks) and Drama (freeze frames for example). We work closely with publishers and authors to ensure that we offer the best books on the market for your child. James’s Katie picture book series has been making art an adventure for children worldwide for 25 years. Does the book contain anything that teachers would wish to know about before recommending in class (strong language, sensitive topics etc.

This little book is extra special because my daughter bought it for me when she and her best friend went to London and Wales. When Katie and her cousin Jack visit London with Grandma, they don’t think there’s much to see and do. I think this would be most suitable for those in the early years at school, although some sensible older toddlers might also enjoy it. So much to see on each page spread that children will be enthralled and wrapped up in this book for many readings and re-readings .

This would be a lovely way to introduce any child to London, perhaps as a way to calm nerves before a first trip or as a way to reminisce after visiting. We were in Trafalgar Square recently and he was thrilled to see the lions on their plinths, just like the lion in the book, and he started talking about all the places the lion visits, so the book clearly caught his imagination. James created his first Katie book 'Katie's Picture Show' over twenty years ago as a way to share his enthusiasm for art with children. Written and illustrated by James Mayhew, Katie's adventures in this book will capture your imagination as Katie and her brother Jack are shown the sights of London by a stone lion who comes alive and befriends them. This picture book mingles fantasy with information most successfully… a lively introduction to some of the main London sights within the context of an appealing story…The text keeps up the pace of the story and includes a lot of convincing dialogue.

Featuring many of London's key landmarks, this storybook has become a bestselling introduction to London, and is perfect for children visiting the city for the first time. London comes to life in this magical adventure' - Independent Featuring many of London's key landmarks, this storybook has become a bestselling introduction to London, and is perfect for children visiting the city for the first time. Slightly older readers might enjoy Me, the Queen and Christopher by Giles Andreae and Tony Ross There are also lots of other adventures involving Katie. This uses the same similar concept in most of James Mayhews books when Katie whilst with her grandma and brother visit a museum, Scotland etc.The story itself isn't particularly thrilling, but we enjoyed it and have read it a few times since then since the real interest is in seeing all the different places they go to. You might like to look at Katie and the Waterlily Pond by James Mayhew and If you'd like to extend Katie's trip to London to Christmas, we can recommend Katie's London Christmas. On their travels with the lion they visit St Paul's Cathedral, The Tower of London, Tower Bridge and some of the sights along the South Bank like The Globe Theatre. It talked about a child visiting London’s landmarks and was a good summary portrayed in a captivating way for kids.
