About this deal

Now in its 5th edition, Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers is available for the first time as an interactive eBook.

Links to the National Curriculum specify the statutory requirements for primary schools in England that relate to the mathematical content of each chapter. the student workbook for mathematics is a wonderful accompaniment and I have used this to form some of my lesson plans for the coming half term. This edition tackles written calculation algorithms with clarity and detail; the emphasis on children understanding these processes and how to support this is maintained throughout. This book provides practice questions that develop the core skills for success in non-verbal reasoning. Access to the content is well supported through the chapter overview that provides a ready reference point for locating the content. The teaching points throughout help to draw relevant links between theory and practice and the self-assessment questions focus on developing teachers’ own content and pedagogical content knowledge. QUESTIONS AND QUIZZES: Achieve a firm grasp of concepts and a clear understanding with self-assessment questions and quizzes. Of particular use are the ‘teaching points’ sections and links to video explanations and further practice.

With over 700 tested questions endorsed by primary PGCE trainees, along with detailed solutions and explanatory notes, the Student Workbook helps you gain the confidence you need to understand, apply and teach the primary maths curriculum. I particularly found the chapter on mental strategies useful for explaining how the laws of multiplication and division work and for encouraging ad hoc approaches to multiplication. Reduce the stress of studying maths and help your child with their homework, following this unique visual guide which will demystify the subject for everyone. Easily understood for someone who didn't like maths at school and has to now teach it (and it's my favourite subject to teach! As a student teacher this book greatly helped me as I was not very confident with maths myself and aided me to be able to feel confident teaching methods to the children.

Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers develops your understanding of mathematical concepts and processes, and how children learn them, so you can confidently teach mathematics to primary children.

During his first in school placement, as he was with yr 6 students, he found this an invaluable resource as he hadn’t studied any primary maths teaching in his first year of study at university. Reasoning and Problem-solving questions encourage you to use and apply mathematical concepts in solving mathematical puzzles or problems in real life situations. I like to recommend this for this group to help them with mathematics pedagogy in training and beyond. There are good illustrations on the use of physical representations to support addition and subtraction with very clear guidance on how to use base ten materials and coins. As part of my PGCE I purchased many books - this one being 1 of 3 that I actually use for my teaching. There are also simple exercises you can complete yourself to test your knowledge after reading each section.

Haylock approached mathematical concepts in very approachable language and if it's not your strong point (like me), this is a great way of bettering your understanding. The physical structure of chapters are well presented, and there is a good balance of colour, text, symbols, and pictorial representations. Learning and Teaching points highlight important issues you may face in the classroom and provide practical guidance for teaching.

This is a fantastic resource for primary teachers as it explains the links and connections in maths and suggests the clearest way to teach concepts to children. Good visual supports, such as number lines, base 10 blocks and arrow cards, supplement the written text and consolidate understanding.
