About this deal

Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f/2 lens: pulling the focus ring backwards exposes a useful distance scale and allows you to use the Olympus M. Take the (very brief) amount of time needed to orient yourself to how it works and you’ll be sliding it back over the lens or taking it off the lens with aplomb. This is subject to the value of the additional products not exceeding the value of the qualifying product. The world's first 1 Dual VCM 2 focusing system makes fast and accurate AF possible with a closest focusing distance of 70cm (distance from the imaging sensor) at all zoom ranges.

Steve is absolutely correct, the f stop is a ratio of the front glass and focal lens, nothing more, nothing less. This may only apply to selected camera models though – it is entirely plausible that this problem won't arise when shooting with an OM-D E-M1, for instance. This is never ideal for lens testing, but I’ve been doing it long enough to tell good detail rendition from bad in a range of situations. With the focus ring in its normal position, manual focusing works just like it does on any other Micro Four Thirds lens. The 40-150mm focal range (80-300mm equivalent in 35mm format) is perfectly suited to a wide range of professional photographic applications including; wildlife, portraiture, weddings, sports and even picking out smaller details when utilising with the minimum focus distance of 70cm across the entire focal range. This is combined with Olympus’s ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating to effectively remove ghosting and flare. Because if they had, they would understand that the settings we use on a Micro 4/3 camera can be quite different to those we would choose on a full frame camera when photographing any given scene.

To make it easy we’ve teamed up with Deko whose technology lets you apply for and complete a loan application quickly, easily and informatively.Yes, it is heavier than the other Micro 4/3 lenses and for that reason, as an arthritis sufferer, I’m not going to be carrying this lens around every day, I’ll stick to my fast primes for my portrait work. The Dual VCM focusing system is the world's first to use two linear motors to perform focusing with a floating method. Below you can see these side by side, with a crop from each taking a closer look at the rendering of the specular highlights. That’s it really, this gives me an ‘equivalent’ image – same depth of field, and the same amount of noise. Superbly built professional standard lens which is splash, dust and freeze proof, and complements the 12-40mm PRO series lens.

As you can see from the 100 percent crops below, with stabilisation enabled you can shoot handheld with the 40-150mm f2. During the six-month deferral period, it is possible to pay off the loan, either by way of a lump sum or in smaller amounts.

Before I move on to talk about the optics and focusing, just to note that like several other lenses in the Olympus range the 40-150mm f2. You can see above how the lens handles a close subject in daylight, but I wanted to have some fun after dark with specular highlights, so below are two shots taken at 40 and 150mm at the maximum f2. I was shooting at ISO values between 1250 and 1600 (it’s winter here in the UK and light is in short supply).

Micro four thirds users get a great choice of options too, with the budget friendly Digital ED 100-400mm lens or fixed prime Olympus 300mm f/4 IS PRO to choose from. As before I framed the shot with the 75mm, then repeated with the 40-150mm from the same position, adjusted to deliver the same field of view. I’m looking at balance, weight, ease of handling, focus performance, contrast, sharpness, and overall quality. The lens barrel is constructed from a combination of metal and high quality plastics, with a glossy finish an In good light you will even find the C-AF performance respectable, if not quite on a par with a pro SLR.

I will probably post some more samples of both the 40-150 +MC-20 and the 50-200 + EC-14 in the coming days.
