Freed Slave (12): Gain 1 doubloon for each character in your den with a rank higher than 12 (night). The art in Libertalia is telling you how good the game is, and it's not lying. This is a really smart game. It's tense and surprising and fun. What could be a simple game of blind bidding for the best prizes becomes a cutthroat power play with more depth than you thought you were going to find.

booty tiles [4 chests, 6 jewelry, 10 goods, 6 Spanish Officers, 6 sabers, 8 treasure maps, 10 cursed relics] Two more voyages will follow, with six more characters drawn into the hand, new loot placed out and doubloons gained. At the end of the third voyage, count up your money and the highest total wins. Final ThoughtsPlayers should have in hand only the 3 character cards which they haven't played during the previous campaign (some characters played may modify the number of cards kept). Daytime abilities trigger when the characters are on the Island, but before treasures are selected.

Pirate’s Cove (2002) – another simultaneous action selection game that involves hand management, as players try to capture treasure from six different islands. If one or more players end up on the same island, their ships battle using dice to decide who gets the treasure. A lighter pirate game that takes 90 minutes. Great for family, casual, and avid gamers. My oldest daughter played clarinet and I got her a middle grade one so we didn't have to rent it. Of course, just after we got it she quits. Paolo Mori’s design hadn’t left my collection since that fateful August day. It survived more than a few of my purges, including the Great Board Game Dump of 2017, where so much of my cardboard went to a better place. There are 30 characters in all; players start with 9, and will use 6 (or 7) during each Campaign, and replenish with a new six between campaigns. The game mechanics are such that the nine starting cards, and each set of replenishments, are the same for all players. However, the play mechanics and some of the powers, combine to create an increasing variety of crew members in each campaign as the game progresses. Production value of Stonemaier Games is consistently high, little details like linen finish rulebooks make their games feel special. Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest is no exception. Particularly pleasing are the loot tokens that have a nice tactile quality to them. I’m not entirely sure why the loot tokens didn’t arrive in the cloth bag that they will eventually be stored in, but I was pleased that they came in a compostable bag. Certainly a commendable step in the right direction. The players take on the role of crew members of a pirate ship nearing retirement. During the 3 campaigns which compose the game, they will try to amass riches by looting ships. Libertalia allows the internal politics of a pirate crew to play out over three rounds of careful card play. With 30 different crew members, each interacting in different ways, Libertalia looks to find who is best at managing the varying desires and personalities of their cards (errr… crew). The all play mechanic ensures there is very little down time and days and journeys pass like ships in the night. In fact, Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest excels at scaling up and down between player counts without adding to the overall game time. In that regard it has cemented itself as one of my go-to games for five and six players. It will still see oodles of plays at three and four too.

During three campaigns, you have to gather doubloons and booty tiles to become the wealthiest pirate. I don’t normally enjoy the “Take That” mechanism. Also, I find it confrontational when people have decided to spend their time playing with me, but in this game, it works incredibly well with the theme, so everyone knows what to expect. The tactical decisions you make are based on almost complete information. You know what characters your opponent has, how much money they have and what loot items are available. This happens for six turns ( days) per round, then any end of week (one time scoring) actions occur and points are awarded. After three rounds, the person with the most points wins. All players resolve this phase simultaneously. All characters present in their den use their "end of the campaign" special actions. The rules are brief and concise; no confusing language, but there are a couple of places where I would have grouped information differently.
