Adjustable brakes - Allows for adjustments on the brake system to facilitate maximum distance with control

The Penn 515 MAG4 is a narrower spooled version of the classic 525 and this makes it a great reel choice for using with finer lines. The lighter and narrower spool also allows even longer casting making the 515 a perfect reel for targeting larger hard fighting fish at maximum range on clean to mixed beaches as well as uptide and light-medium down tide boat fishing applications. Each of these three-piece hybrid rods (styled Medium, Medium/Heavy and Heavy) is 4.27 metres (14ft) long and designed to be used with a Penn 515 Mag4 reel for ultimate casting performance. With these rods being hybrids, anglers can actually use either a fixed spool or multiplier reel with all three of the rods. The 515 MAG4 is perfect for targeting tough ground bass as well as general beach work, but with its greater line capacity the 525 MAG4 is the reel to choose for long range beach and mixed ground fishing. The magnetic braking system is now adjusted by a ‘CS’ Style Mag Knob – This makes it easy to adjust the drag to get the perfect setting for conditions on the day. It also allows experienced casters to reduce the braking ‘mid cast’ to try and eke out those extra few yards The 525 Supermag also has 6 bearings, of which the 2 inner spool bearings are upgraded to ABEC 5. Starts life as a 525 MAG. It has 6 magnets (4 standard + 2 extra). The 2 extra sit behind the magnet carrier in either positions 1 and 4 or 2 and 3. Thesy are held on by magnetic force. Gold anodized spool. There is also a wee bit of jiggery pokery going on - and hey presto - Supermag!Like the Mag 3, the Mag 4 has stainless steel main and pinion gears. Penn doesn’t specify exactly what type of stainless steel has been used (not all stainless steel gears are created equal – read more about the properties and varieties of stainless steel gears here – https://www.sportfishingmag.com/fishing-reel-gears-explained-0/ ) but the fact that Penn has added extra support to the ‘uprated’ graphite cage should hopefully mean that the structure is sound enough to function harmoniously. It certainly feels smooth and not at all grindy in use. The 525Mag4 spool is forged and machined aluminium, so it’s ultra-light offering several advantages. Being light, it takes less inertia and power from the lead in flight, so the lead flies further, and the reel casts further. Also, on initial release and in free flight, the spool is more controllable by the braking effect and suffers less from overrunning due to the revolving weight in the spool being less. These spools are also tough and are highly unlikely to suffer from line crushing pressure when big fish are fought and retrieved on very tight lines from a long distance out. For this review, I decided to initially use the reel just as it comes from the factory, with no tweaks or modifications save for a little end float adjustment. Normally, I would think about cleaning and re-oiling the spool bearings (as these are usually lagged with grease), but I figured that this wouldn’t be something that everybody would do. So I didn’t. In the days of social media influencers / sponsored anglers /pro-teams or whatever else you want to call the armies of individuals every brand has on hand to create a mini fanfare on launch of most products, it’s refreshing to see when a product comes out on name alone. There was very little foisted upon us with this reel, but it was eagerly anticipated none the less. The increased line capacity of the 525 means that heavier breaking strains of line can be used and this combined with improved gearing means it is the perfect reel for heavier ground work as well as uptide and light-medium down tide boat fishing applications.

The foundation of any angler's arsenal is a reliable sea fishing rod. When it comes to sea fishing, you'll want a rod that can handle the unique challenges of saltwater environments. Saltwater rods are typically more robust and corrosion-resistant than their freshwater counterparts. Premium Reels The 525 is the perfect size for all round beach fishing situations, but that does not mean it is limited to clean ground by any means. The increased line capacity of the 525 means that heavier breaking strains of line can be used and this combined with improved gearing means it is the perfect reel for heavier ground work as well as uptide and light-medium down tide boat fishing applications.

Jim's Reel Shop Service & supply NEW parts for ABU, Daiwa, Penn & Mitchell fishing reels Accessories Product The standard handle is 50mm long, from the centre of the handle knob to the handle bushing, the attachment point For its next test, I brought the 515 along for a session at a local haunt in pursuit of ray and bass. This shallow surf beach can be a deceptively testing venue, with a strong lateral run of tide and an undulating seabed that frequently grabs at your lead on the retrieve. With no need to fish at anything over medium range, I set the mag control to its maximum setting and enjoyed trouble-free fishing for the next five hours. Fortunately, the ray were at home and they were hungry. I totalled five small eyes with two coming to the rod paired with the 515. The little reel made quiet, assured work of its job, the drag system worked flawlessly (I’ve yet to have a problem with the drag on a Penn reel) and I was suitably impressed.

The drag system is ultra-smooth when line needs to be given and without pause, while pressure builds up to move the spool. This drag system can apply a whopping 20lbs of direct drag pressure too, and will pretty much wear down any big fish you’re likely to hook off the shore.Straight out of the box, what this reel is good for is predictable, painless general fishing where absolute maximum distance is not a priority. It’s great strength is its versatility. It’s pleasant to use on a light rod (this would pair nicely with a 2-4oz outfit in a surf bassing situation, for example) but is still fine with being strapped to the bottom of a 14 footer and used to haul out a ray. I mostly plan to use it for ‘third rod’ fishing, where I’m doing things like feathering, prospecting for smaller species or trying an alternative bait to what my two main rods are fishing. It can also double as a spare in some situations too, in case I have any issues with my usual Fathom 15s. This is also what is called a Versa Drag system. This means you can alter the drag washers to give varied settings to cover a wider range of fishing conditions and pressure settings. However, we’ve found the standard drag perfect for all the fishing we do, which is very varied, covering clean sand to rough ground and for every species from whiting to shore tope, also uptiding for cod, rays, and tope on the boats. We’re happy with it the way it is!

The handle is made from a heavier gauge metal to give extra strength, the soft grip T knob is comfortable to hold even with wet hands I bought three 525 and two 515 Mag 2s at the time they were released and, while I would consider the 525s barely adequate for general fishing, I did enjoy fishing with the 525’s little brothers. For whatever reason, my pair of 515s didn’t seem to suffer with quite as many of the problems that their larger siblings did (apart from their shared tendency to occasionally trap the line between spool and cage). The 515s are also a really nice fit for lighter rods, which is something that I can’t say so easily for the equivalent from the Fathom range: the Fathom 12. For a few years, I’ve paired my AFAW 4&Bait with a MK I Fathom 12 fitted with an aftermarket mag control. This reel has served me really well but it has always felt a bit ungainly on the light rod. After recently scratching a two year itch and buying a Graphex Tip Tornado Ultra Lite, I was looking for something with a little less weight and a more balanced feel to team it up with. Enter the Penn 515 Mag 4. Many will see the launch of Penn’s new flagship Mag4 beachcasters as a breakthrough into a higher price band. Within this range there are three rods covering a variety of mixed and rough ground fishing. Selecting the right fishing line is crucial for landing that prized catch. In saltwater fishing, where fish can be larger and more powerful, choosing the appropriate line is essential. So Much MoreFind a preferred setting that you’re happy with and you will have so much fun. Each cast was a joy with no horrible grinding noises when winding in; that’ll be the stainless-steel gears and pinion, which are so much better than bronze versions.
