Description

The mechanical quality generally feels good although I do see some cost cutting measures, as the markings are only printed, not engraved and filled with paint as I am used to from TTArtisan. A minimum focus distance of ~0.6 m is average for a 50mm lens. Of course a lens this small does not feature a floating elements design so I expected very soft pictures at f/2.0. This is a great little hunk of a lens. It's very good optically and built like a Swiss tank — just like LEICA. Simply couldn’t get the damn hing to flare. But images are wide open with direct sun at a slight angle.

The red mounting-index ball is visible in low light, and easy to feel in total darkness. Every lens should be be like this, but too many others hide the index marks and don't make them feelable, as if they're deliberately trying to hide these very important marks. Stopping down to f/2 the sharpens up quite a lot and becomes a lot more contrasty. As is to be expected. Optimal sharpness is achieved at f/5.6-f/8, but who on earth buys a 98USD 50mm f/1.2 lens to shoot it at f/8?….. yeah…didn’t hink so either!Compared to the mentioned Leica Noctilux and Voigtlander Nokton fast 50mm lenses I feel the TTArtisan lens offers great value for money. The lines running through the circles are due to the glass I used as a mirror to take these pictures and are not a feature of the lens. color cast

Regarding the ninja-star aperture shape and possible reduction of focus shift: at this point I can’t recall the exact source; it’s one of those ‘things I read on the internet.’ I have a theory about why the shape might minimize focus shift, but since I’m not an optical engineer and have no way to verify it, I’ll refrain from potentially digging myself further into a hole. 🙂 Leica Support/ Zoom Consultations/ Mentor – Not sure what camera or lens to buy or need help with your photography? Book a 1:1 Zoom call! It's smooth and perfectly damped and easy to turn, and has no play. It feels so nice it's hard not to just fiddle with it all day. This TTArtisan 50mm f/1.4 ASPH is a superbly well-made lens, and it's sharper than my LEICA SUMMILUX 50mm f/1.4!At close distances there is a lot to like: bokeh is smooth and undistracting, thanks to low optical vignetting point light sources take on a natural shape even close to the corners of the frame and the comparatively high contrast at the maximum aperture adds to a nice sense of depth and subject separation. This TTArtisan 50mm f/1.4 ASPH is a completely manual lens, with manual focus and manual aperture setting. It has no electronic communication to anything. It manages to accomplish something where even some of the fast Voigtlander lenses fail: stopped down it is plenty of sharp across all of the frame. Coma, or sagittal coma flare, is often seen with fast normal to wide lenses as weird batwing shapes on bright points of light in the corners at night. The thing is, that old Nikon lens is about the same size as the TTArtisan lens being reviewed here, but the TTArtisan lens does not need a bulky adapter to be used on a mirrorless camera.
