About this deal

Having said that, in addition to the colour, it looks like a decent tamper too, with Aluminium handle and stainless steel flat 58mm base, and it's available in a range of other colours if you're not a big fan of baby pink.

This is the WDT tool I usually use in conjunction with the above if I'm using a two-tooled approach. The reason it's important to get a level surface is that an uneven surface can promote channeling, which is what happens when water under pressure finds paths of least resistance through the coffee, leading to uneven extraction and therefore poor tasting espresso, or at least poorer than it would have tasted if it hadn't have channeled.

I'd recommend you measure the size of your portafilter, and/or the useless tamper part of your plastic scoop, just in case I'm acting on incorrect or out-of-date information. Simply pace your portafilter on top of the rest and the Puqpress clamps and tamps your coffee with the present force. TAMPER WITH SPRING: The purpose of the spring here is to bring the tamper collar back to the start position after the powder was tamped. Yes, I'm going to say my coffee is amazing, but if you knew more about the process that goes into choosing these coffees, you'd possibly better understand where I'm coming from when I say this. If you refuse to pay these charges your parcel may be abandoned, and Alternative Brewing will not be held responsible for any loss of funds as a result of this occurrence.

I was also expecting it to be more like a torque wrench and ‘release’ at the correct pressure, but is of course the same as yours. Another tamper from the well known coffee gear brand Motta, but this one has a slightly different shaped handle, maybe one to try if you haven't got on with more standard handle shapes. The coffee distributor and leveller combination tampers have become pretty popular over the last few years. Distributing the coffee essentially means to break up the clumps and more evenly distributing the ground coffee. Consistent Pressure - The amount of pressure you apply is simply controlled by a pre-calibrated spring inside the tamper itself.

In simple terms it needs to be pressed into shape rather than forced, otherwise, the water will not be able to pass through the coffee. So just tamping in a way that you're able to do consistently each time, just applying pressure until you can tell that the tamper has stopped compressing the grounds, while ensuring that the tamper is completely level, is fine. I’m Tom and I have been working in the coffee industry for over 10 years, starting my journey as a barista in Australia, working on coffee farms in South America and roasting coffee in The UK. To be fair, there is a knack to tamping even with proper tampers, switching to a decent tamper isn't going to completely resolve tamping inconsistency, but it'll certainly help in my humble opinion.
