About this deal

Rather nice and further demonstrating that blends needn’t all be rubbish, grain heavy, Tesco’s shelf filler. This expression features whisky matured in Pedro Ximénez, Oloroso and virgin oak casks, resulting in a huge flavour profile of fruit, oak and vanilla.

Along with sending out the tasting boxes they have a forum on their site for everyone to share their tasting notes, as well as the usual whisky chat, which will hopefully fill in the gap that not necessarily being around others drinking the whiskies leaves – I can’t wave my arms around and mumble about whisky on the internet, so it’s a bonus for everyone. Water calmed down the bitterness of the wood, turning the almonds into marzipan and the fruit from the nose into fizzy fruit chews. I’m a fan of slightly brighter/grassy, citrus fruit stuff, or full on smoked whisky’s over the sherried end of things, and this is a great, non peated/smoked, whisky.

The initial rush of rich vanilla sweetness gives way to a touch of cinnamon which adds a spicy edge to the soft and sweet texture. Anyways, the second tasting of November was deliberately pushed towards the end of the month as it was in honour of Movember, and the extra couple of weeks meant that there were some moustaches on display, unlike during the Smoking Section tasting where MoSista Charly‘s stick on lip warmer was the only thing worthy of the name ‘Mo’. Both Burns and whisky are global Scottish icons and we aim to promote this new bottling around the world. As the saying goes, ‘the level doesn’t lie,’ and with Arran 10, it’s a testament to its irresistible allure. Water nrought out more spice on the nose and more sour fruit to taste, with hints of grapes and some sugary sweetness on the finish.

Pleasingly I was finally able to make it to one of the easiest distilleries to get to by train – Dalmore.Every cask of whisky made by our master distillers is unique - and now you can put your name on one. We started off with Jura Prophecy, distilled in 1992 with 90% matured in bourbon casks and 10% in sherry. It’s every bit as impressive as the big brands we tried, and comes in a very giftable presentation tube. I only noticed after taking the picture and pinched a glass of it from one of the empty spots on my table.

Thompson Brothers have been quietly building a fantastic reputation for both quality and value, and SRV5 fits that reputation well and is Anthony’s new go to whisky. The marzipan flavour is something I’m definitely going to be looking out for in other drams and I may have to have a try of their regular 12 year old.Along with the regular bottling and this 18 year old Extra Black they also used to do an Extra Rare, which I have a cloth bag covered bottle of in my whisky cupboard.
