About this deal

Reference must be made to limitations regarding dimensions and configuration described in the ETA 23/0088. Without tooling, the bond area between the sealant and the sides of the joint may not be sufficient to prevent the sealant from pulling away from the sides of the joint.

The backer rod supports tooling so after installation of material the sealant can be pushed to the bond line with a spatula, ensuring wet-out of the sealant to the substrate. While studying the instructions to apply window frame sealant I came across the suggestion use these strips as a base. OK, the gap doesn't really look that big in the pics but anyway, there's nothing wrong with a big silicone seal it'll just take longer to go off and will take some more skill to make sure it looks good, you can use a backer rod if you really want to then I guess to prevent wasting silicone and it just being squeezed down the gap, the silicone quadrant just needs to lap onto the bath and the bottom of the tile by a mm or so. The width of the gaps differs somewhat but I was able to squeeze in the foam with a screwdriver after which the sealing/filling was quite easily done. A backer rod is a flexible foam material that is used in construction to fill gaps and joints between building materials, such as concrete, masonry, and wood.

I realise it’s intended purpose is for back filling before using a product like silicone but it’s also good for filling gaps such as between floorboards to reduce gaps. For joints with significant width variation along the length, TP300 Joint Backer Plus is recommended. These products can help to ensure that the joint is properly sealed and protected from moisture, air, and other elements that can cause damage over time. Backer Rod is an integral component of sealant joints, it provides three main functions that allow the sealant joint to perform. Everbuild Firefoam B2 Handheld is a quick setting one part polyurethane foam with fire resistance properties.

Closed cell backer rod is a round, flexible, closed cell polyethylene foam with an exterior "skin" used as a backing and thickness control device for elastomeric and other cold-applied sealants. Provides backing against which the sealant is applied, forcing the sealant to the sides of the joint for adhesion. It also helps to control the flow of the sealant, ensuring that it is distributed evenly and adheres to the surfaces of the joint. Closed-cell backer rods should not be used with sealants that cure by reacting with moisture in the air because the closed cells will not allow air in from the back of the sealant bead, in turn retarding the cure. This makes for a total seal and the foam would flex during temperature changes due to weather conditions. As such it is an effective way of working, and a much more cost efficient manner with respect of sealant or filler used. Realising that they would needed to be stuck instead of screwed into place, I googled sealant and adhesive that would do the job. Place the oversized backer rod into the joint and push with a blunt tool to tightly fit against the joint sides at the required depth.

Backer rods are held in place by compression, it is important that the rod selected is about 25% larger than the maximum expected joint opening, thereby creating the proper depth to width ratio, act as a bondbreaker, and provide a firm surface against which tooling can be done.Joint Backer Rod is a non-absorbent compressible grey closed cell polyethylene foam backup material. The foam satisfies the fire resistance requirement of 240 minutes at a depth of 20 cm and is suited for quick and inexpensive sealing between concrete elements, Leca and similar where the top finish is not required. It also enables proper sealant tooling when inserted into a joint as the backer rod allows for appropriate depth. It is important to avoid over-compressing the backer rod, as this can cause it to lose its shape and affect the performance of the sealant. metres will generally go around either the opening door sash or, alternatively, the outer frame of a standard size Upvc door system.
