About this deal

They are very durable - they'll stand up to a lot of wear, and as long as you roll them properly, they unroll and flatten out easily. portable: I think that this solution is a bit less encumbering than a dry-erase board, especially at the sizes I'm thinking: I want something I can carry with a backpack, if possible.

Decided this time I will streamline the game, put more emphasis in story telling and less focus (and money) in materials. I have been able to leave my drawings on my battlematts for 2 weeks and they came off with no problem. Dip some alcohol, rub a little, dip some acetone, rub a little more, then dip some alcohol and rub some more.I'm not so excited about experimenting with my Chessex mats with adhesive-backed permanent bonding and hoping it works out, though. It could be that the new mats don't share this particular quality, in which case I suppose I just need to reinvest. But I figure that I could just keep some wet wipes and some paper towels with a small trash can close by. Using the wipe-clean mat gives ultimate flexibility, but it isn’t as visually satisfying as the other options. Tape them together in a way that you can fold the two boards in on each other, with the grid-ed face inside to keep the grid clean while storing.

I've recently switched over to a vinyl Chessex battlemat (from a dry erase board with one-inch squares cut into it) because I needed more room. Just roll it up real loose and let it flop down on something without bending, or stand it up behind a door or something. The video talks about using graph paper for the grid, but I like my grid squares to have permanently typed (X,Y) coordinates on them so character positions can be easily noted in the event that we have to stop in the middle of a session and still be able to set everyone back up where they were. The only reason that the Battlemat is not totally flat is that it is bigger than the actual dinner table. Drew a 2 cm grid (I use 2 cm because that's roughly how big my tokens are- I use small white-blue-red poker chips) on it with permanent marker, preferably a different color from the whiteboard marker to be used later. Once you have one page with the proper gridlines, photocopy as many as you need for your mat (I'd estimate somewhere around 15 or 20). As it stands, they are still very good, but the concern over markings is why I stick with counters and terrain markers. If you get a frame with thick black plastic around it, it can help keep dice from rolling off the edges.
