About this deal

This book was also another reread, but it felt very much like a new book to me, because it had been so long since I actually read through some of the poems! The characters of all the humble flowers and trees we can see along the lanes, in the fields and gardens are charmingly captured, with little asides that immortalise country sayings and wisdom. Thank you Penguin books for bring back to life the magical world of one of the greatest authors of all time!

I loved the Flower Fairies so much when I was young and now being able to read this with my daughter was such a lovely experience. The entire read is a magical experience filled with load of educational information and beyond cute in so many delightful ways! Mary Shelley's darkly disturbing tale is illustrated by Angela Barrett and newly introduced by Richard Holmes. Yet this larger book size chose not to display in kind, and instead opted to place multiple fairies (out of frame occasionaly) with their poems on a single page. We get to learn which flowers bloom in summer, winder, spring and autumn, and even which berries are edible and which ones will send you off into the land of poison. The book has the complete collection of poems of Cicely Mary Barker divided in sections with the drawings in great quality and detail. On the other hand, if you don't have any kids in your life, nobody will blame you if you get it for yourself. Perfect for fans of all ages, this wonderful collection includes all the original Flower Fairy poems and illustrations by Cicely Mary Barker from the classic books. Her paintings of the fairies with the flowers are beautiful and encouraged me to take up painting and hope to become an artist one day (I did but her fairies stand alone).

Featuring extraordinary illustrations by Clive Hicks-Jenkins and an exclusive introduction by Janina Ramirez, each of the 750 numbered copies has been signed by both contributors. We have the collection as smaller individual copies which also have their charm, sometimes bigger books seem overwhelming and lose the magic, however in this case, all is as it should be. All in poetry form, with the paintings as fresh as they day were were completed, a clear index provided for favourites to be quickly found, this is a perfect choice for all ages to share and enjoy. Cicely Mary Barker was the illustrator who created the famous Flower Fairies; those ethereal smiling children with butterfly wings.

Today, almost thirty years after her death, her work continues to offer delights that have stood the test of time. From Victorian Britain to the tech-savvy 20th century, the gentle enchantment and intimacy of the Flower Fairies ensure their enduring fascination and connection with the natural world.

Each poem is individually presented on the facing page to its relevant painting, just as in the first editions of Barker’s little volumes, while our font has been carefully selected for its close resemblance to the original.

To turn the pages is to enter another world, one where beauty and joy leap out with a laugh, banishing everyday cares and recreating that bright pleasure experienced when really looking properly at the flowers and countryside.

The bloodthirsty biographies of the world’s most infamous pirates are reproduced in this Folio edition of Captain Charles Johnson’s renowned work, including original woodcut illustrations and a fascinating introduction by Margarette Lincoln. All of the plants and flowers depicted in Barker’s paintings are easily identifiable in gardens, parks and woodlands, so these beautiful characters can educate as well as entertain. He worked in the Department of Botany at the Natural History Museum from 1965 to 2007 and remains a Scientific Associate at the Museum. This new edition, with a pretty new cover - published by Penguin Books South Africa - will make you nostalgic for your youth, and will remind you of all the beauty in the world without needing to step a foot outside.
