so different from the modern era that there is no clear “linearity” between the dots this book seeks to connect. Yet when the fastest car starts at the back it can produce spectacular action, such as Lewis Hamilton’s drive in the 2021 Interlagos race, when he started at the back and hauled himself up to fifth, a drive so audacious that it made Fernando Alonso laugh when he asked where Lewis had finished.

Originally from Altrincham, Simon Arron grew up near Oulton Park, writing and photographing club races for the local newspaper and subsequently Motoring News, until he was taken on as a full-time reporter in 1982. This is just a throwaway reference in a photo caption here but it manifests that the book doesn’t just wend its way from headline event to headline event as if nothing noteworthy happened in between but that the authors find ways to impart tidbits that in and of themselves may seem peripheral but really are emblematic of bigger stories. Topics range from memorable Formula 1 events, to technologies and their impacts, to rivalries in the sport. Before WWII, before Formula 1, unquestionably the pinnacle of motorsport was generally European Grand Prix racing. He has led the Haas F1 team since its inception, debuting in F1 in the 2016 season, and since then has also gone on to appear in the hit Netflix show Drive to Survive. There will be more sprint races – trialled in 2021 – and greater fan interest driven by Netflix’s hugely successful ‘Drive to Survive’ series. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E. No one would settle for WEC Champion or Australian Supercars champion, Indy Cars Champion, Japanese Super Formula Champion or Formula E Champion if they had a realistic shot at the F1 title. This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. But, the elephant in the room is: what will readers with a catholic sense of the sport’s full history since 1950 think? Along with changes to circuits and the technology of the cars, this book highlights the commercial changes and the controversies that threatened to split the sport apart - such as the threat of breakaway series proposed at various times by teams. A must-read for completists or for those new to the sport, F1: The Pinnacle is a fascinating insight into one of the most exciting and dangerous sports in the world. Technical changes aimed at levelling the playing field for the teams combined with the sport’s tightening budget cap have made the races closer than ever.
