Description

When grown indoors, most carnivorous plants can be kept in the container and compost that they were bought in, for at least the first year. Alternatively, many growers have good success adding liquid orchid fertilisers (such as Orchid Focus) to the pitchers. Hampshire Carnivorous Plants: Matt Soper offers one of the widest ranges of carnivorous plants in the UK. Some carnivorous plants are hardy, so can be grown outside all year round, while others need to be kept frost free, either indoors as houseplants or in a greenhouse. Say goodbye to unwanted insects once and for all and grow two different carnivorous plants which feed on flies.

At Growlands we believe in quality over quantity and have designed a number of products that enhance and boost plant growth cycles. Our Carnivorous Plant Compost can be used as Venus Flytrap Soil, Pitcher Plant Soil, and Sundew Soil. This offer is for all plant foods that growlands sell and covers Carnivorous plant food, Orchid Plant food, and indoor house plant food. A prey's proximity to the trap entrance triggers a valve trapdoor to open into a hollow bladder, creating suction that then flushes the prey inside. Some of that is genetic which is why it is best to plant many more seeds than you need plants so you can select the best plants. Grown under the conditions outlined in this carnivorous plant care guide, the plants will be able to collect enough insects on their own to do well. A cloche is a small, portable, protective structure made of glass or rigid transparent plastic used to protect plants, especially overwintered and early vegetables, from wet and cold weather and to warm the soil before planting. A good mixture for these CPs is fine grade moss peat mixed with either lime-free horticultural sand or perlite, to a ratio of about 2:1. Whether it’s pests, diseases, or environmental factors, equip yourself with the knowledge to ensure your carnivorous plants not only survive but flourish.

These plants come from many parts of the world, including North America, Asia, Australia and Europe, so their growing requirements vary widely. It has attractive red and yellow speckled pitchers, and is a particularly good candidate for a houseplant.

Many carnivorous plants can be grown indoors, in a bright position but not usually in direct sun, as the leaves can scorch through glass. There are actually five different kinds (or ‘genera’) of pitcher plant - their common and scientific names are listed below. Suitable compost is available from carnivorous plant suppliers and some garden centres, or you can mix your own. Dormancy: Venus flytraps and all North American pitcher plants require a cold winter dormancy between November and February, while Cape Sundews can grow year-round.
