Description

Kakeru is carefree and friendly, but a poor student and he can sometimes be a bit slow on the up take.

There have already been brief glimpses of their early schooldays together: we’ve seen Kakeru fiercely defend the quiet, reserved Yamato when insensitive classmates made unkind remarks about his absent father. Maybe when more chapters have built up and I develop an emotional countenance stronger than that of a half-melted chocolate eclair, I'll pick it up again. But what kind of future can such a relationship have when one of the two is more committed than the other – or, as is the case here, is more sure of his own feelings? I Cannot Reach You winds the clock back in Volume 6 to the time Yamato and Kakeru were in elementary school together – and were the same height! Angry and hurt at Yamatos memory loss, can Kakeru pull himself together enough to tell Yamato the truth? The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. The look on Yamato’s mother’s face when she’s trying to keep a positive attitude in front of her children is especially poignant, as is the look on Kakeru’s mother’s face when she goes into labour in the middle of a typical mother-son argument over a missing card and Kakeru is consumed by guilt that it’s all his fault. It takes me back to my first love story that wasn’t understood at the time as this series so skillfully is.

Here are the North American anime, manga, and light novel releases for May Week 1: May 3 - 9 Anime Releases 2. Meanwhile, Christmas is fast approaching and Yamato and Kakeru’s class is planning a Christmas party. This helps each of them feel more like their own complete character rather than just half of the main couple. But even though that misunderstanding is cleared up and they agree to go out together to the cinema on The Day, Kakeru is so agitated at the prospect of going on ‘a date’ with Yamato that he spends a sleepless night with the inevitable consequences. Five volumes in (Volume 6 came out in Japan in June 2022) and readers who’ve been following these two will be wondering, as I’ve been, if this relationship is ever going to progress.

The side characters are also decent and aren't just there to be plot hinderences, which I appreciate. There's nothing more you'd want to hold closer to your heart once you find THAT book that feels like a getaway, an escape from reality. Yamato, now the taller (and possibly the more emotionally mature of the two) knows what he wants – commitment – from Kakeru, but Kakeru, lacking in self-confidence (and maybe just not ready to commit to a romantic relationship) constantly ducks out, runs away, disappears whenever Yamato makes a move. When I found this manga, I thought the artstyle wasn't to my taste because of the cover, but it seems it looks 10x better when it's not coloured!
