About this deal

Again, I don’t believe the major cast is dubbing themselves in either language and a number of actors, including the white dudes playing CIA and American cops (a bunch of scenes are shot in Seattle and Vancouver), and Michael Wong, are speaking English on set. children, the eldest of which became known as the Yuen Clan, including consistent Woo-ping collaborators Cheung-yan and Sunny (Shun-yi), In the Line of Duty III director Brandy (Chun-yeun), and In the Line of Duty IV co-star Yat-chor (not to be confused with director Chor Yuen, no relation). Hong Kong was well ahead of the gender equality curve in the eighties, making action movies with kick-ass female leads, decades before Hollywood would get behind the idea. Easily the equal of any American action movies from the same era, the In the Line of Duty series are enduring proof of the genius (and recklessness) of Hong Kong filmmakers.

The story of an Immigrant Seattle dock worker Luk Wan-ting (Yuen Yat-chor) accidentally gets involved with a drug bust gone bad. Four classic police stories from the Golden Age of Hong Kong action, where the women kick ass as hard as any man. The very last Audio Commentary track is an archival one with critic Stefan Hammond and actor Michael Wong beginning with introductions and Wong’s admission about having not seen this film in decades. The films both look fantastic, with clean, detailed pictures, lovely colours and natural grain structure. As in the case of the other movies in this In the Line of Duty I-IV collection, there was an earlier Blu-ray from CMS in HK, as well as a UK-exclusive Eureka release that I assume utilizes the same 2K remaster as this 88 Films disc. English Credits (2:20) – the same credit sequence from the Cantonese version with English Language Credits for both Beginning and Ending Credits. The film is very nicely shot too, likely aided by the fact it’s co-directed by one of Hong Kong’s best cinematographers, Arthur Wong.

The English audio dub sounds decent but is flatter; the dialogue and action are all on the same level. Ningen on Jake Gyllenhaal goes full on Jackie Chan in the Trailer for Doug Liman’s ‘Road House’ also starring Conor McGregor But did you see Road House *2*? Cracking action movie with Cynthia Khan and a fresh faced Donnie Yen, reminds me of police story but just a bit more serious, with excellent fight scenes (as I expect with any film starring Mr Yen ) for any fan of Hong Kong cinema this is a must see. Was diesen aber von den anderen abhebt, sind zum einen die grandios choreographierten Kämpfe von Yuen-Woo Ping, der hier auch Regie führte, sowie das Talent von Hauptdarsteller Donnie Yen.The action is impactful, bloody, and mean but always so quickly and smoothly edited to within an inch of its life you’re never quite sure of how bloody and mean it is in the moment. Early on the film really plays on the comedy side of things, especially with Yeung trying to make a difference as a police woman, but coming up against the daft bureaucracy of the department, and an uncle who wants to keep her away from all of the action. There are so many breathless paced amazing feats of daring one will overlook even the slight fumble in logic.

Frank Djeng’s commentaries are, as usual, crammed with facts about and filmographies of the cast and crew, as they appear. Cynthia Khan holds her own in all departments too, in a role that could almost have been written for a male cop. Donnie Yen isn't the main star of the film, but he is still involved in many action sequences in which he is remarkable.

The final Audio Commentary Frank Djeng is joined by Michael Worth again on the track to discuss the HK Cut of the film opening with the alternate titles. Ng would be found going it alone and avenging her friend’s death along with finding said microfilm, though she’s partnered up with Scotland Yard’s best of the best Carrie Morris (Rothrock). Ng seems to have the case under control when she is joined by Inspector Carrie Morris (Cynthia Rothrock), whose first scene in the movie is a knockout. Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock (then Kahn) star as the toughest cops on the streets, using fists, feet and guns to take down triads, thieves and international criminals.
