Signal-to-noise ratios of continuous wave signals ranged from 5 to 15 dB, indicating the utility of this source to transmit controllable infrasound signals over distances of 5 km.I just wanted to post this so it would be easier to find if anybody wanted to construct a VLF subwoofer. Here’s a brief description – I’ve written this summary several years later, from memory, on request from various correspondents so please excuse any details that are missing. It doesn't do it every time the duration is changed, but every 4th or 5th change of duration or so, when you press play, it plays as a single tone and not a sweep. Also, the generator can be used for installation on vehicles (ships, helicopters, planes, cars, etc. When we play two pure tones in the room together, a perfect fifth apart, our brain percieves a resultant an octave below the lower note (see this very helpful description by Colin Pykett, 2011).the resonator tube and the diaphragm form a resilien system which has a natural frequency that should be considerably higher than the frequency of the sound generator such that a fraction only of the mass forces from the vibrations of the resonator tube is propagated to the boiler via the tunnel. Also, due to the good passage of infrasound in any environment, a sound generator can be used for driving in a fish net, as well as a communication tool. This is not the same thing as percussive noise which produces sudden and massive pressure changes over a wide frequency band. It was only by chance that I heard it 15-16 years ago and I lost contact with Rob, who built it, when he moved.
