About this deal

Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. Both women have extremely different roles in this book, but Golding crafts them each in a way that gives them a distinct personality and a steady, realistic motivation for acting in the ways that they do. Destiny, on the other hand, is an only child living on a rundown estate with a sickly but devoted mum who constantly tells her that she’s really the daughter of a famous rock star . I really felt for Lauren and also ended up feeling as frustrated as she did when no one believed her--and even when she starts to doubt herself.

In true jaqueline Wilson style it followed the story of two separate young girls one wealthy, one poor. when the day comes Destiney and her mum go to her dads house but as he is a popstar they are very quiet. Melanie Golding pitched this story perfectly, for me it was just the right level of unnerving, sinister and creepy. It felt like she was trying to mix her other books, 'clean break', 'illustrated mum' and 'secrets' together. I think it's a bit misleading that it has found its way to the mystery/thriller section when it is mostly a contemporary with elements (or suggestions) of magical realism. My faveourite character is destiny and mum because they never give upand they just keep on trying to fing destiny’s father Danny Kilman. Lauren, desperate with fear, locks herself and her sons in the bathroom until the police arrive to investigate. Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review!

This novel is a dark fantasy/psychological thriller and won the 2019 Dragon Award for Best Horror Novel. More on the reality side, it's a bit hard to believe that a celebrity and a local are related to each other. After all the hassle of trying to get Destiny to meet her father, I also found the ending to be weak and abrupt and wish that moment had been more fleshed out.Instead, after following Harper into the beginning of a seemingly-unrelated case, we learn a very different truth about what has happened, a truth not hinted at in the premise and tangentially mentioned only once in the story. Melanie Golding is a graduate of the MA in creative writing program at Bath Spa University, with distinction. And yet, Lauren claims that she keeps seeing the woman and that her babies are in danger, and soon Harper is sucked into Lauren’s spiral of fear. However, these encounters can easily be explained away by the postpartum depression Lauren is clearly experiencing. But that’s the point of him, Melanie Golding wants us to feel empathy and sympathy for Lauren and her situation, to make it more believable when the story kicks in and boy doesn’t it just kick in.

A new mother in England's Peak District faces a dire threat to her children from someone only she can see. Lauren struggles with exhaustion, but with encouragement from her friends and a shove from Patrick, she finally gets it together and takes the boys out for a walk along the river. As a teenager she started work for a magazine publishing company and then went on to work as a journalist on Jackie magazine (which she was told was named after her!And the ending, while ambiguous, skillfully walks the line between psychological and supernatural horror. The child characters – and perhaps child reader – end the book thinking that it is great the family are finally united, which I find problematic considering the evident exploitation of the child. But the strange woman is persistent, and when an accident with the twins culminates in Lauren insisting that her babies have been exchanged, it’s up to one stubborn detective to find proof that Lauren’s claims are not as crazy as everyone thinks. Brooks presents a case for making room for Bigfoot in the world while peppering his narrative with timely social criticism about bad behavior on the human side of the conflict: The explosion of Rainier might have been better forecast had the president not slashed the budget of the U.

Welcome to my blog about reading, recipes, writing, and whatever else happens to pop up while I have your rapt attention. There were many times when I just wanted to put it down and start another book but I'm the type of person that when I start a book, I have to finish it.The author did an excellent job of portraying a post natal woman on the edge - very little sleep, a husband who shows no inclination to share responsibilities, and appears to care little about her well being. I started reading the Spiderwick Chronicles in elementary school and went on a little fairy binge; maybe it’s more common in children’s books? It's much more an exploration of mental health trauma and postpartum struggles, which it does extremely well. It’s a fun, easy read that kept me intrigued throughout, but the characterisation and conclusion left a lot to be desired.
