Kaya has a minor meltdown and it's left to Kouji to get her and her mother out of the building so that they don't die in the flames. This also allows the novel to connect with characters introduced in volume 2 and sets up well for a longer arc.

Of course, the sickly Tadakiyo admits that’s partially a ruse, as there are suspicious goings-on nearby. Enraged that his father knew about Miyo's abuse but did nothing, Kouji attacks his father with his powers but is defeated and restrained.Watching their blossoming love through more shikigami, Minoru desperately plots to break them up with a plan involving Kaya. Though Miyo managed to escape Usui after Kiyoka came to her aid, the Gifted Communion continues to gain power and influence across Japan. I’ll be staying up to date with the anime as it posts but I highly recommend reading the novel over watching it at this point in time.
