Goffney’s ability to delve into such complex and nuanced themes to create a compelling, three dimensional story always has me in awe—and My Week With Him is no different. Although this fiction novel is aimed at 14 years olds about new experiences for young adults I thoroughly enjoyed it. This could have made her a bitter or mean character, but once again, Goffney has taken something that could have gone very badly, and made it absolutely gut-wrenchingly good. I have a massive soft spot for the best friends to lovers trope, if well done, and it was so well done here.

One aspect of Goffney’s writing that I’ve always enjoyed and found to be her strength is the strength to make me feel.I haven't read books set in Texas before and found it a good setting for a story about a promising singer. Confessions of an Alleged Good Girl was right up there, and almost too relatable with the condition I also have and the strict religious parents. My Week With Him follows Nikki, a young Black girl who, after being thrown out by her mother, decides to flee to California to pursue her music career. The story is interesting and i know young people will relate to parts of the story and the interactions between characters. The situation was never portrayed as all good or all bad, giving space to all of Nikki's complicated emotions about it.

You can't help but sympathise and empathise with Nikki; you want her to go out on her own and take back that control that was stolen from her, you feel for her frustration and her sadness.

After a big fight and a betrayal from her sister, her mom kicks her out of the house, and she decides to flee to California and try her career in music. This was a fairly enjoyable medium paced read that kept me entertained for a couple of days while enjoying some sunshine.
