About this deal

What follows is a road-movie done magic-style, with shades of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, with magical creatures and cultural references that readers may or may not know (George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery) as well as talk of underground railroads and slavery, interlaced into important Black locations and history (New Orleans, Uhuru).

Her debut novel, The Hate U Give, was acquired by Balzer + Bray/HarperCollins in a 13-house auction and will be published in spring 2017.give further historical and emotional depth to this rousing quest tale's already richly articulated cultural context. The characters are mostly fun, but there is no way that a twelve-year-old can have so much world knowledge as that, or be so eloquent - their vocabulary is much too big. This book is no-holds-barred, fly by the seat of your pants (and other methods) trip to the corner of Thrill Street and Wonder Avenue. Overall, this is another take on the middle-grade magical fantasy genre that has exploded over the last twenty years.

Nic Blake and the Remarkables: The Manifestor Prophecy is one of the the best middle grade novels to have come out of 2023 thus far. Angie Thomas did such a great job building this world and creating a magic system that is familiar and fresh! I just know that any child that sees themselves represented in the pages of this story is going to absolutely love it […] I could tell Angie Thomas had a lot of fun writing this book, you could really feel it in the pages and with every new magical mishap that happens to our group of friends. When her godfather gives her a pen that she can send messages to whoever she thinks of she decides to contact her mother, trouble is Nic’s father hasn’t been completely honest with her about why it is just them and her actions change the course of her life forever. However, it is also rooted in the Black American history, with rich considerations and connections that make this a really contemplative, mature and splendid read. I do have some basic knowledge about America, but honestly, there were a couple of times when I was just baffled by what was being said or mentioned. It’s the perfect story for fans of HP, Percy Jackson and Amari and the Night Brothers looking for their next thrilling and magical adventure.

It was hard to follow, and I think younger readers could struggle with this as well (more so, since they aren't as experienced with reading/storytelling).There is a little too much exposition at times, though this of course is necessary to understand this Remarkable world. Packed with humor and bursting with heart and imagination, Nic's story will enchant readers of all ages! Those readers will inhale Nic Blake and the Remarkables--and then begin counting down the days to its sequel.
