When Minerva McGonagall announced the good news that the school would not be closing, many students shouted " Dumbledore's back" or " The heir of Slytherin has been caught". He is overjoyed to learn that Harry has received a Firebolt for Christmas, then downcast when he learns that Professor Flitwick and Madam Hooch are examining it for hidden jinxes before allowing Harry to use it. Several times throughout the series, Wood is described as looking manic or having bulging eyes when speaking to his team, and every time he shakes the hand of another Quidditch captain, he meets their eyes boldly before kicking off into the air. He made his dream of becoming a professional quidditch player a problem the entire team had to shoulder by way of intense, rain-filled practices and early morning practices sans breakfast. Oliver became Captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team in either 1990, his fourth year [9] or 1991, his fifth year.

Oliver was the captain of the Gryffindor team who was so excited about the prospect of Harry Potter helping them win the Quidditch cup that he was almost skipping when he shared the news with Fred and George Weasley. His team is groggy and barely attentive, but Wood takes no notice, just as the Knight of Swords would take no notice if his comrades dozed off during a discussion of his battle strategies. This could be a reflection on the fact that he is a captain so he tries to focus exclusively on his responsibilities. Oliver Woods’s enthusiasm for regular training sessions was not to be quelled by raindrops the size of bullets.

In a way, Oliver Wood is what Harry could have become if all that Voldemort business wasn't going on – a nice guy, a good captain, a Quidditch fanatic, and a star player. Looking in classrooms, she eventually finds Professor Flitwick's room, and asks Professor Flitwick if she could borrow "Wood".
