Description

There is a story about the unusual lottery that takes place in this neighbourhood (the loser has to take care of Hachirō, a boy with a voracious and seemingly never-ending appetite), one about the bitter rivalry between two girls named Yōko, one about a princess moving to the neighbourhood, another recounting the origin of the Sand Festival, and many detailing people who are curses or are part of some sort of prophecy. When they are done, they can completely cover the houses with icing and decorate them with candy pieces. People from My Neighborhood is a collection of odd, unconventional and interconnected stories about unique individuals that resides in the same neighborhood. Kawakami's magical and engaging collection pulls the reader into a small Japanese community via stories told by unnamed narrators. For all of our voyeurism and curiosity, we get the sense that, ultimately, this is a world that will exist and transform with or without witnesses.

People from My Neighborhood by Hiromi Kawakami Reviews of People from My Neighborhood by Hiromi Kawakami

The telling captures the elaborate fantasy that embellishes the stories of the very old when they recount their lives to the very young (the only people who will understand the magic they have lived, and not scoff). It has all the components of the uncanny, but without any of the chilling or menacing nature a lot of weird fiction tends to have. An enchanting origami of linked stories, most no more than three or four pages, set in a neighborhood of eccentrics whose better selves betray them . Sure, not every story works, but that tends to be because elements of the story don't speak to me, and that feels so deeply personal, I can't really hold that against the book. I’ve encountered Goossen through his translations of Haruki Murakami, which makes him well-equipped for the blurring of fantastical elements with the mundane. There’s no denying the presence of fascinating and visually striking concepts, but it feels more like a scrapbook of ideas and jumping off points than a fleshed out, cohesive collection.

The wonderful founder of these magazines (Ted Goossen, Motoyuki Shibata, and Meg Taylor) have established a literary journal to translate, and then publish in English, Japanese short stories, essays, and poems.

Next, “The School Principal”, an unemployed man in his mid-fifties, assumes command of the neighborhood’s canines. It is like hearing fairy tales, never are the fantasy elements questioned but only stated as obvious facts in the mechanisms of life. Under Kawakami’s hand, slice-of-life scenarios are approached from odd angles and permeated by a sense of surreality that will make readers question what exactly is going. Este reencuentro con una de mis autoras japonesas contemporáneas favoritas ha sido maravilloso y lleno de sorpresas. Falsification revolves around the memories and perceptions of the people in the neighborhood being manipulated and falsified, which leads to a change in how they visualize the neighborhood and its people.
