I have this recording on the Footstomping Graffiti double CD (No label). Noisy but fairly clear audience tape. At Stowe School on that April afternoon all of 60 years ago, the exuberance that would carry John, Paul, George and Ringo on a crest of an unparalleled wave was well in evidence.

Like many of their songs the arrangement was often toyed with, not least by the singer who over time added many an ad – lib to the lyrics. As it was performed on every Led Zep show, this enabled the song to retain a freshness. There was nothing like the pressure they had in following Zep IV with Houses Of The Holy. The lukewarm press reaction to Houses would only spur the four to greater on stage heights. The touring period from March in Europe through to the lengthy US jaunt in the summer of ’73 saw Led Zeppelin perform to overflowing audiences with increasing confidence. ON TV ATOMIC ROOSTER AND LEON RUSSELL WERE GUESTS ON BBC2’S DISCO 2 WHILE THE ANDY WILLIAMS SHOW INCLUDED RAY CHARLES, ELTON JOHN AND CASS ELLIOT The photograph has also been identified as likely showing Wiltshire thatcher Lot Long and was taken by Ernest Howard Farmer. Crystal clear ambient sound here – John Bonham right upfront in the mix… Jimmy is just incredible …

The whole evening is wonderfully summed up by the excited comment of one of the elder generation of Zep fans here tonight. Below, you can see a sketch drawn by Edwards of the moment the iconic photograph was taken. The historian drew the image while fielding calls from everyone from The New York Times to BBC News to LedZepNews as we all wanted to know the story of how he discovered the photograph: Brian Edwards told LedZepNews that he found the image by chance. “I flipped it upright and lo and behold my jaw hit the floor,” Edwards said. “There was something immediately recognisable about it.” It turns out that there was a six-figure charity donation on the table, but only if Plant performed that specific song during the show. No Monday morning feeling that week either. Absolutely not. A day in the WH Smith shop selling the records and tapes of choice to the Bedford public and then the nightly prospect of 137 minutes of Zep up on the big screen. It was pure heaven. Dec was with us on the Wednesday and again on the Friday where we sat through the afternoon and evening screenings.

So on the player the Tangible Vandalism double album bootleg which has various rehearsals from the recording sessions at Headley Grange in early 1974. All was warm & still inside the Dome, however, and we were well rewarded for our efforts in getting there. I managed a word with the ever-genial sound maestro Mark Kennedy during the interval, who told me that they were using a brand new sound rig on this tour, but there were no first night gremlins audible in the circle. Indeed, the sound was crystal clear, probably the best live mix I’ve heard, allowing the intricate arrangements to be heard in all their glories. The scene in the Our Price record shop in Bedford that I managed on this day 29 years ago – for on October 15, 1990 the first ever Led Zeppelin compilation set was released – the double album Remasters,.to be followed two weeks later by the 4LP/CD box set. It opened up Zep to a whole new market..and boy did we sell some Zep product as Colin Stonebridge, Justin Cromie and Jason Foster will remember…great music retail days they were… They didn’t play this much after January, replacing it with the more complex Heartbreaker. This is a strong, fun version with a funky Crunge-like middle section. ROBERT PLANT & SAVING GRACE UK TOUR REPORTS/LZ NEWS/ LED ZEPPELIN IV IT WAS 52 YEARS AGO/ SOUTHAMPTON ’73 /DL DIARY BLOG UPDATE

There’s already a great sense of occasion in the air. Original 1971 promoter Jim Aiken comes over to view the scene. “This is so special to be witnessing this again,” he tells me. “I can remember how excited we all were to get them here at the time. Nobody apart from Rory of course and a few others bothered to play Belfast. We still talk about the night Zeppelin came…”It’s an iconic group photo and it was great to be in such an historic Zep landmark on the day of the 40th anniversary reissue of Physical Graffiti eight years ago today… For me, this recording as hard a listen as it is, provides a genuine perspective of where The Beatles were at during that tumultuous year – a 12 month period that would cement their success for all time. To me this has the feel of of a radio friendly single mix – and hearing Brandy & Coke aka Trampled Underfoot in this way makes Zep sound like the greatest singles band ever. Imperious funk meets revved up riffing with refreshing clarity…

Saving Grace has four shows remaining on the tour next week, including a final performance on November 25 in Wolverhampton. IN FOOTBALL, FOLLOWING THEIR GIANT KILLING FIFTH ROUND 3-2 VICTORY OVER LEEDS IN THE FA CUP, COLCHESTER WERE BEATEN 5-0 BY EVERTON IN THE SIXTH ROUND. IN THE SAME ROUND ARSENAL DEFEATED LEICESTER 1-0 IN A REPLAY ON THEIR WAY TO SECURING THEIR CUP AND LEAGUE DOUBLE. This one from our TBL friend and associate Mark Bowman – he also took the pics here from that night.True the Led Zeppelin catalogue had been released on CD – though not from the original masters and transferred via analogue tapes. The results were mixed. I did a feature in Record Collector in early 1990 reviewing the original CD’s (I’ll need to dig that one out) ,blissfully unaware that Jimmy was about to overhaul the entire catalogue for CD. The decision to work at their own space with no pressure of a tour to prepare was a crucial one. Jimmy’s wry comment that ‘’1974 didn’t really happen’’ was a something of a smokescreen – as creatively it very much did happen and it would set the seal on a six month period in 1975 that would see them conquer America yet again and present five shows at London’s Earls Court that really did capture them at the peak of their powers. April 28 – Robert Plant and Alison Krauss will perform at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans, Louisiana. Chris Charlesworth remembers the aftermath: “About five hundred fans attempted to storm the rear of the building, throwing broken bottles, stones and pieces of scaffolding. Three of the group’s five limousines were severely damaged, and the drivers of the other two – which were parked inside the building – wanted to take their cars away. Peter Grant wasn’t having that… oh no! He actually offered to buy them on the spot for cash, but after a ‘discussion’ the drivers had no alternative but to let him have them. The arrival of the video age of course would soon make it much easier to view. I invested in a bootleg copy in early 1981 – not of brilliant quality but it had to be had!
