To truly bring action to life, the 4K Boost Lens has a groundbreaking Active HDR video mode. This captures action scenes with a high dynamic range, giving you improved details in the highlights and shadows for more vibrant footage. 48 Megapixel Photos

Winding the capture quality up to the 6K widescreen setting does challenge many aspects of the camera, including the battery life. On longer clips the unit gets pretty warm, not catastrophically so, but ‘quite’ hot, and the battery life dives well below the claimed 75 minute runtime for the 4K boost lens, and 84 minutes for the 360 array. A couple of test runs on widescreen 6K 2.35:1 got more like 45 minutes apiece, which isn’t too bad considering the competition. The 360º records everything in 5.5K 30fps, so here it’s mostly about the post-processing and templates, of which there are a few new ones; ‘CineLapse’– a transition-heavy hyperlapse — and the trippy ‘Horizon Levelling’ join dozens more. However, that screen is small. It’s dynamic, changing orientation and according to the aspect ratio of the video or photos you’re creating, but its 24x24mm size make it hard to use for anything other than making sure your subject is roughly in the centre of the screen. Despite that tiny size, it works well enough for doing a piece to camera. There is no single verdict to be given on the Insta360 One RS’s image quality, because it can be used with a bunch of different lens and sensor combos. You can plug the 1-inch sensor module from the One R, the long-standing 360-degree mod, or even the original default 4K camera. Boost Lens: This is an upgrade to the previous 4K Wide Angle Lens. Thanks to a larger 1/2" 48MP sensor, it shoots more detailed 4K 60fps video and 48MP photos. Two new innovative modes are also available: 6K Widescreen mode for ultra-high-res 2.35:1 videos and Active HDR mode for better highlights and shadows in action videos. Also available are , a 2,380mAh Boosted Battery Case, a 3D Mount for capturing stereoscopic footage, and an External Mic Adaptor (USB-Type C to 3.5mm) for pairing with an external mic such as RODE Wireless Go. Talking of audio, the Insta 360 ONE R captures it using two microphones, and you can also record audio wirelessly using the onboard mics of Apple AirPods.

You shouldn’t use HDR all the time, though. It’s limited to 30fps at 4K resolution and in lots of situations HDR video looks too much like the HDR photos from much earlier generations of phones, with less realistic-looking mid-tones and a hit to color fidelity. It also highlights the purple fringing that is a regular issue with the camera, where three branches against the sky have a violet aura to them. It can shoot entirely decent HDR images, but you need to let the Insta360 app actually compile them. Try to dig them straight out of the camera and you’ll just find the separate exposures that are used to make the final picture. There are some neat features for the more serious video shooter, though. There’s a flat Log color mode for standard video shooting (as well as Vivid/Standard color modes). Insta360 provides easy access manual controls too. Just swipe right-to-left on the preview screen and you can set that color mode as well as shutter speed, ISO, exposure and white balance (note: only white balance is available in HDR video shooting). The new ONE RS Twin Edition’s most impressive feature is the ability to change the lens and transform a 4K wide lens camera into a 360º camera by just swapping the lens, the only action camera that has the ability to do this and makes the price worth it. Unfortunately, creating a private stream for just a few invitees isn't possible on Facebook, as you can only restrict your post to either yourself, your friends, or the public. This meant I couldn't create a 360 livestream just for my family, which is one of the reasons I was so interested in investigating the ONE RS. The app also notes that you can only broadcast 30 minutes of live 360 video at a time. Saying said this, the Insta360 is a more complete sports camera being able to record both 360º degree videos and the typical wide-angle sports cam videos. You can edit all your pictures and videos on the Insta360 app which works great, possibly the most complete. It’s a big upgrade over the Insta360 One R’s HDR video, with virtually no evidence of ghosting this time. This suggests it may use DOL-HDR, where two exposures are captured in one read-out sweep of the camera sensor. In this same hazy sky scene where the GoPro had the upper hand with Auto shooting, the One RS's HDR mode takes an easy victory with a much more vibrant, less noisy-looking foreground. Of course, the resolution boost won't mean much unless you have the hardware to actually view 8K media. But as always, the option to future-proof your footage is always appreciated, and the extra pixels open up more options for editing without noticeably compromising image clarity.
