Tapa Dura. Condition: Bien. Peter Alliss has spent his entire life steeped in golf. He was born in 1931, the son of Percy Alliss, one of Britain's leading professionals between 1920 and 1939. Peter himself turned professional in 1947, at the age of sixteen. During his pro career, which lasted until 1974, Peter won three British PGA championships, played in eight Ryder Cup teams, and ten teams representing England in the World Cup. He won 23 major tournaments in all, his most memorable achievement being in 1958 when he won the Italian, Spanish and Portuguese Open Championships in three successive weeks. He has had a colourful personal life, which has not always been easy; he has been married twice and had five children, and also had to learn to cope with the grievous loss of his young daughter, Victoria. Peter Alliss is now universally known and loved for his golfing commentaries throughout the world, for the BBC in the UK and ABC in the US. For millions of people around the world, Peter Alliss is 'the Voice of Golf,' and his unique style has added insight for the viewer of the televised game. He was recently voted by Golf Digest as 'The Best Golf Commentator .Ever.'. PC, the most decorated British rider in speedway World Championship history with 10 FIM gold medals, has begun collaborating with Retro Speedway's Tony McDonald.
A fortnight after his British GP win, Collins was killed at the Nürburgring. Fighting for the lead, Peter was running between Tony Brooks’ Vanwall and the other Ferrari of Hawthorn; at Pflanzgarten he got slightly off line and went off the road. With 10 FIM gold medals, he remains the most decorated British rider of all-time. Honoured in 2001 with the MBE, the all-action racer known as ‘PC’ is also England’s most capped international with 154 appearances for his country. Congratulations, it is a book to be proud of. Although I have many speedway books I have only read a few of them, and I read far more non-speedway (mainly history or biography). Tragedy is as well written as any I have ever read. Winning the world title at Katowice in ’76 was not only PC’s career highlight, it was the pinnacle for British speedway, too. Passing San Lorenzo, the famous restaurant, the other week, I was reminded of a pleasant lunch there, years ago, with a charming American lady: Louise Collins, widow of Peter. She had been to Silverstone a few days earlier and had not really known what to expect, inevitably wondering if it would spark memories of another time. I know very well that Peter is a thoroughly decent bloke and it shines through even when he is being critical. He always has something nice to say even about those who have hurt him. A true champion. I pray that he will find relief from the ‘passes’ saga which has hurt him so much - it’s not worth the pain. Well done, Peter and Tony. There will be lot of new material on PC that no-one has previously read or heard of and rare, previously unpublished photographs.Peter Spencer Collins MBE (born 24 March 1954) [1] is a former speedway rider [2] who spent his whole career (1971–1986) with the Belle Vue Aces, the team he supported as a child. There could probably be a second volume that just concentrated on the couple of years in which P.C. was a promoter, truly remarkable stuff. I wish to thank Archbishop Mark and Archbishop George for their consistent and enduring support. To God’s Holy People in my new diocese – clergy, religious and laity – I offer the assurance of my prayers and ask for their prayerful support over the coming weeks as I prepare for my ordination and episcopal ministry.
