Description

Through the eyes of Maf we’re provided with an insight into the life of Monroe herself, and a fascinating take on one of the most extraordinary periods of the twentieth century.

Combining life-writing with poetic prose, Anthony Joseph gets to the heart of the man behind the music and the myth, reaching behind the sobriquet to present a holistic portrait of the calypso icon Lord Kitchener. If you haven't come across Ronson yet then you might like his writing if the weird and wonderful interests you or if you like the documentary style of Louis Theroux (who Ronson is inevitably compared with). An enjoyable and informative read that's given me a taste to find out more about a number of topics. The rest of the chapter is taken up with interviews with Chris' friends who talk about their empathy for his actions, and also a charming joke about prostitutes. If you had read all of his books, you will find that some stories were repeated from books Out of the ordinary and What I do.

His work includes the international bestsellers Them: Adventures With Extremists and The Men Who Stare at Goats, which was adapted into a major motion picture starring George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges. Ronson then presents the Alpha Course leader Nicky Gumbel's mention of the Book of Joel as a "message from God" (the chapter title) because Ronson's own son is named Joel, but he does not attempt to point out that he was signed up for the course ahead of time, under his own name, and that his family members' names can be easily discovered online. In diesem Buch sind viele Kolumnen von Jon Ronson gesammelt, die er im Guardian bereits veröffentlicht hat.

Or, you can be like me (and my partner) on our recent roadtrip, and just listen to the whole thing straight through - definitely gave us some things to talk about later! Ronson has spent his life investigating crazy events, following fascinating people and unearthing unusual stories.

The award winning documentary maker Jon Ronson is fascinated by madness, extraordinary behaviour and the human mind. Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying this, just often left feeling cut short at the end of each and every chapter. Lord Kitchener (1922 – 2000) was one of the most iconic and prolific calypso artists of the 20th century. There are some really funny pieces included such as Ronson's recreation of James Bond's car journey from Ian Fleming's "Goldfinger", eating and drinking everything Bond did on the journey and making himself very sick (Bond, it turns out, was a glutton alcoholic chain smoker who rarely exercised). Always intrigued by our ability to believe the unbelievable, Jon meets the man preparing to welcome the aliens to earth, the woman trying to build a fully-conscious robotic replica of the love of her life and the "Deal or No Deal" contestants with a foolproof system to beat the Banker. Frequently hilarious, sometimes disturbing, always entertaining, these fascinating stories of the chaos that lies on the fringe of our daily lives will have you wondering just what we're capable of. I think this is a really well done collection of different journalist ventures however I found it really hard to get through the chapters as I simply didn't care about the subject matter. It’s his third collection of such articles, and while the first two are more about himself, this one picks up the thread in his earlier work Them: Adventures with Extremists.
