Description

Choosing the right size pot for your plant is essential. If the pot is too small, roots will become root-bound and unable to absorb enough water or oxygen, which can lead to stunted growth or general health issues. On the other hand, if the pot is too big for a given soil mix it can hold too much water, leading to over saturation and root rot. We refer to the size of pots by their volume capacity in litres. The below graphic gives an approximate measurement of the most common pot sizes that we use – think of the ones you’d find in your local garden centre! Similarly, if the pot is too big, then it can cause the soil to become waterlogged, leading to oxygen deprivation that stunts plant growth. The ideal size for most plants is one or two inches larger than the current root ball – this allows adequate drainage while still providing enough space for healthy growth. Does pot size determine yield or root?

Here at Glenmore we believe in making things clear and simple – but there are a couple of complications with pot sizes. The first is that, depending on the size of the pot, there are different ways to measure them. This is the size that many nurseries use for 'specimen' plants. These are plants that were grown in 3 litres last year, have been moved into these larger pots, and then grown on for another year. Plugs themselves are often measured by their height in cm. Mini plugs measure from 4-6cm from base to tip and usually need 8-10 weeks of further indoor growth before planting out. Standard or medium plugs are 6-8cm in height. They will be ready for planting after 6 to 8 weeks. Jumbo plugs (8-12cm) are also called garden-ready plugs and, provided there is no longer a risk of frost, can go straight into hanging baskets, beds and outdoor pots. Dimensions: 55.5cm diameter top, 39cm diameter base and 48.2cm depth. Internal top diameter 50.5cm. Capacity: 75 litres. All prices shown below are per parcel with a maximum weight of 30 kg per parcel. Items over 30 kg are split into multiple boxes and charged per box.

Dimensions: 64cm diameter top, 46.3cm diameter base and 53.5cm depth. Internal top diameter 59.5cm. Capacity: 125 litres. Slightly larger than a 2L, we generally use these for our garden centre plants and some amenity lines. Navigating pot sizes poses problems for amateur and pro gardeners alike, but once you’ve understood the fundamentals, you’ll be able to select the right size with confidence. No matter what kind of pot you are measuring, make sure you subtract any empty space between the rim and top surface of your pot when calculating its volume. What does pot size mean for plants? Our pots taper so the base will be narrower than the top. Please see the table below for measurements of all available sizes. Rose Pot Size However, for instant impact in your outdoor space, you’re likely to want to invest in a few ‘feature’ plants, and they will more often than not be in larger pots. For example, for an ornamental tree, you would need to start at around 15L (and you could expect a tree of at least 120cm height).

The size of pot the plant is in always matches its requirements, particularly in terms of root space. So, naturally, bigger plants are delivered in bigger pots!To ensure your plants stay healthy, select pots that are proportional to their expected full-grown size, so you can provide them with adequate room for development.
