I really hate to make this sound so harsh because I do value the ideas here! It's a beautiful book. I just wonder if a 15 year old might enjoy this kind of doodling, etc. more than a 7 year old. Jo Schofield is an environmental educator and author who works with her writing partner Fiona Danksto create beautiful books about the natural world. Ellie, who is chief of police, needs help and she knows just who to call on. Her sister Julia. Julia is a psychiatrist battling her own demons after her life imploded, when a patient of hers killed others before taking her own life. Julia feels immense guilt exacerbated by the publicity these events have received. After retreating to her home town the last thing she needs is more publicity, but she cannot ignore Ellie’s plea for help. The child has obviously been the victim of severe abuse. Julia agrees to start working with the girl, naming her Alice. But can she help or will she end up doing more harm? And why have no parents stepped forward to claim the child? Fiona Danks is an environmental educator and author who works with her writing partner Jo Schofield to create beautiful books about the natural world. The Nightingale is currently in production at Tri Star, with Dakota and Elle Fanning set to star. Tri Star has also optioned The Great Alone and it is in development. Firefly Lane, her beloved novel about two best friends, was the #1 Netflix series around the world, in the week it came out. The popular tv show stars Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke and Season Two is currently set to conclude the series on April 27, 2023. In a small town in the Pacific Northwest, on the outskirts of the vast Olympic National Forest, a strange girl shows up one day. She is mute and savage, climbs trees with speed and wild dexterity, and her companion is a wolf. Head of police Ellie has her work cut out for her, along with the town Doctor, Max. Ellie calls in her sister Julia to help. She’s a revered child psychologist who has just suffered a serious blow to her reputation. What better time to leave California? I strongly recommend this to ALL parents. While I'm fortunate to have a child who loves nature as much as I do, I think this book could get even the couch potatoes outside and having fun.

Cheryl Strayed Hikes Her Way Through Heartbreak in Wild". Oprah.com (also, April 2012 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine). March 2012. Archived from the original on March 24, 2012. (Originally titled "Inward Bound: Hiking Her Way Through Heartbreak"). Hello Yellow - 80 Books to Help Children Nurture Good Mental Health and Support With Anxiety and Wellbeing - I also struggled with the idea that the main "voice" of the book was trying to prove herself as a leader in her field, but she missed OBVIOUS psychological issues with her sister, "boy friend", co-worker, best friend, etc. I also wish the child welfare issues were researched more carefully and were less sensational - if the voices behind this book want the press to stop seeking a scapegoat whenever something terrible or unpleasant happens - it seems the author would try to do the same and honestly examine every side of this fictional story. In The New York Times, Dani Shapiro called the book "spectacular... at once a breathtaking adventure tale and a profound meditation on the nature of grief and survival, ... both a literary and human triumph." [14] Shapiro wrote that unlike many parallel-arc stories, Strayed's two parallel narratives—the challenging hike itself and the difficult life events that preceded it—are delivered in perfect balance. [14] According to Shapiro, the memoir did not overdramatize its events, but followed a "powerful, yet understated, imperative to understand (their) meaning," allowing readers "to feel how her actions and her internal struggles intertwine, and appreciate the lessons she finds embedded in the natural world." [14]Readers will be encouraged to draw on their creativity, to express themselves without fear of being judged, and to make their book really WILD! This is a unique book aimed at children ages 7-9 years old -- the idea is for the child to take it outdoors and color in the book as they follow along with a variety of prompts. This dialogue in this book seemed to have a Lieutenant Horatio Caine (David Caruso in CSI Miami) undertone. I loved the deep love between the sisters and the wild child, Alice. Reading how the three of them become a beautiful tight family tugged my heart. I also enjoyed other supporting characters such as Peanut, Max and Cal.

Jo Schofield gained a degree in psychology from Exeter University and began her career working for an educational psychologist in London. After getting involved in the production of a film, she went on to work in the creative department of a TV advertising agency where she began taking still photographs. This led on to her becoming a commercial photographer in Australia and then London. She worked mainly for national editorial magazines such as Country Living. When her children were small she worked in Watlington Primary School and the Dragon school in Oxford, applying her creative knowledge to the classroom with children aged 6-9 years. More recently she has been focusing on writing and photographing for a series of books with co-author Fiona Danks. I loved the main character Julia. She is the kind of soul that carries the world on her shoulders. Sensitive, kind yet a bit timid and an introvert. Where as her sister, the supporting character is extremely beautiful and she knows it. A little self centered and man crazy, yet loves her little town where she grew up in and feels a strong bond to her community.

This is my first book by Kristin Hannah. I really enjoyed her writing style. I have The Nightingale on my list to read next. April 2013: For Wild, Strayed received the Reader's Choice Award in the 2013 Oregon Book Awards. [9] Magic Hour tells the story of the two sisters Julia and Ellie who have never been particularly close. Julia is a psychiatrist living in LA. After having been involved in a tragic scandal relating to one of her patients, she feels worn down and torn with what to do next. Ellie lives in the Rain Valley, the small Washington town they grew up in, and works as a police officer. She’s been divorced twice and can’t seem to find what’s missing in her life.
