Description

With a tragic historic tale at its heart, and a modern-day single mum struggling to deal with its spectral resonance, Carly Reagon’s The Toll House debut tingles with historic and psychological intrigue. It’s a gripping ghost story that unfolds with chilling pace through narratives told in two timelines. From a reader's perspective, this book has pace and provides all the chills. It follows a fairly well-trodden path, but it doesn't matter because it's well done and a debut to be proud of.

Melding modern-life with mysteries from the past, this is a readable romp of suspenseful supernatural fiction. A book that feels like it's watching you as you read it... an unsettling and gripping ghost story that'll have you looking over your shoulder until the end! -- CARI THOMAS author of THREADNEEDLE This novel was, in fact, carried off so much more convincingly and compellingly three years ago by the fantastic Alison Littlewood in 'Mistletoe'. We'll try and keep your nerves in their present healthy condition," he remarked. "For my part I have a sort of half-and-half belief in the supernatural." As a result of this pedestrian style of writing, this novel was impossible to invest in. 'The Toll House' basically comprised: 'she did this'; 'she thought that'; 'then this happened'; 'he said that' and 'she replied'. Everything was told to me; there was no necessity for any work to be done on my part as the reader. But the story begins to build around her. Things beyond her son not wanting to sleep alone begin to happen in the house, the (also boring) doctor she's seeing begins to act strangely and her past catches up with her. Suddenly I understood why she was so flat before, she wanted a new start and left her past behind her, but when it catches up we learn who our protagonist really is and I started to like her much more. But don’t forget, there are also those who have tarnished such places with death, deceit, madness, and with such practices a stain develops which can never be removed no matter how much you try. History Makers: Female Writers Dominate the 2023 William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award Shortlist It's in a good cause," said Meagle. "A most worthy object; and something seems to tell me that we shall succeed. You didn't forget the candles, Lester?" He walked carelessly to the edge and looked over. In response to his startled cry the others drew near, and all three stood staring at the dead man below.

Nice place to come for a nap," said Lester severely, as he pointed to the gap in the balusters. "Look there! Another yard and where would you have been?" So, definately read this. Be brave – turn off the lights and just imagine what may lie behind your walls…. Meagle shook his head, and they stood for some time in uneasy silence. "May as well shut the door," said Barnes at last. If there is any it might not be safe to drink after all these years," said Lester. "We must do without it."He followed slowly for fear of extinguishing the candle, until they led him at last into a vast bare kitchen, with damp walls and a broken floor. In front of him a door leading into an inside room had just closed. He ran towards it and flung it open, and a cold air blew out the candle. He stood aghast. I also liked the alternate timelines used and felt that it managed to convey the whole story perfectly, and added to the drama with the reveals it gave. Bejeepers. This is one of those novels where I question why I read creepy novels at night. There are no real locations in this book but it’s the setting of the old toll house that is the real draw. I read a bit about toll houses when I spotted this book as it seemed as if it was going to lead me down a dark path…and it did. Just look at that cover for a start! They walked on for some time in silence, broken only by White's tribute to the softness, the cleanliness, and the comfort of the bed which was receding farther and farther into the distance. Under Meagle's guidance they turned off at last to the right, and, after a walk of a quarter of a mile, saw the gates of the house before them.
