Description

In 1999 a new 1,450cc (88cuin) Twin Cam engine for the 2000 model year was used. This necessitated a bespoke engine variant and changes to the frame. By Harley standards, it is not a heavy bike, the 330 kg’s (727 lbs) is greatly moved about and mastered again due to it’s low centre of gravity (all the weight is close to the ground versus a sport bike where engine and weight are positioned higher) and low, low seat. The explosion symmetrically compressed the plutonium to twice its normal density before the "Urchin" added free neutrons to initiate a fission chain reaction. [35] Given the difference in displacement, it's no surprise that the H-D Twin Cam edges out the Suzuki mill at the dyno. The C90 produces 84.8 pound-feet at a low 2,800 rpm, and to be fair, that's a decent amount of torque that comes on very early. Still, the 103B takes the cake with 102.5 pounds of grunt at three grand. Power comes from a fuel injected, air-cooled and counterbalanced Twin Cam 96B V-twin mated to a 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission, and the mill is fed by a five-gallon fuel tank. Peak power comes in at 93.7 ft.-lb. of torque at 3,000 rpm, and the 1,584 cc engine averages 35 mpg city, and 54 mpg highway.

Battery (per Battery Council International Rating): Sealed, maintenance-free, 12V, 19-amp/hour, 270 cca Both motors come with an electronic throttle feature that allows for a plug-and-play cruise control accessory, which is nifty and progressive as far as it goes, but it can't yet hold a candle to the rest of the world that is into 2nd and even 3rd generation ride-by-wire, rider modes and traction control. One hopes the electronic throttle is the first step in that direction, and that Harley catches up on the electronic gadgetry sooner rather than later. In 2012 the Fat Boy received the new 1,690cc (103cuin) Twin Cam engine along with the rest of the softail range You have ample torque to perform with when exiting city to free-way on-ramps. Of course these engines emit heat! And in rush hour traffic, idling in direct blazing sun you might have a semi-melt down. Tip: wear good insulated motorcycle pants (chaps?) to ward off the heat. The original fat-custom icon commands the road with a steamroller stance. For 2022 its Lakester cast aluminum wheels are re-styled with 11 turbine-like spokes and an open center, and the classic Fat Boy® model tank badge is revised and now has a single trailing “wing” while retaining the centered star. [26] [27] This was superseded by the Y-1291 design in December 1944. This redesign work was substantial, and only the Y-1222 tail design was retained. [27] Later versions included the Y-1560, which had 72 detonators; the Y-1561, which had 32; and the Y-1562, which had 132. There were also the Y-1563 and Y-1564, which were practice bombs with no detonators at all. [28] The final wartime Y-1561 design was assembled with just 90 bolts. [26]

Oppenheimer reviewed his options in early 1943 and gave priority to the gun-type weapon, [2] but he created the E-5 Group at the Los Alamos Laboratory under Seth Neddermeyer to investigate implosion as a hedge against the threat of pre-detonation. Implosion-type bombs were determined to be significantly more efficient in terms of explosive yield per unit mass of fissile material in the bomb, because compressed fissile materials react more rapidly and therefore more completely. Nonetheless, it was decided that the plutonium gun would receive the bulk of the research effort, since it was the project with the least uncertainty involved. It was assumed that the uranium gun-type bomb could be easily adapted from it. [5] Naming

The 103B in the Lo measures out at 1,689 cc for a slight size advantage over the 1,462 cc, C90 engine. Both run in a V-twin configuration; Harley in its typical 45-degree layout, and Suzuki with a slightly wider, 54-degree V. There are no shortage of 60-plus-degree V-twins out there, but the geometry just doesn't look right to someone used to Harley engines, and it affects the overall look of the bike. Suzuki gets credit for closing the angle just a little bit for a more natural-looking engine to Western eyes. When you ride any Harley-Davidson motorcycle, that renowned signature rumble takes your heart away. The Fat Boy Lo gives each rider and female motorcycle riders a terrific “ride experience” right from the moment of taking its new lower profile handlebar into grip. Right away, you sense the narrower seat and when you press start – you’ll feel its increased power. In 2005 a 15th Anniversary version was sold with a "Screamin' Eagle" engine, special paint and custom wheels. [10]Hinton, TJ (January 12, 2018). Harley-Davidson also produced a 30th Anniversary edition for 2020. [17] Inspections of certain systems and components are required at 2,500 mile (4,000 km) intervals. Drop tests began in March 1944, and resulted in modifications to the Silverplate aircraft due to the weight of the bomb. [24] High-speed photographs revealed that the tail fins folded under the pressure, resulting in an erratic descent. Various combinations of stabilizer boxes and fins were tested on the Fat Man shape to eliminate its persistent wobble until an arrangement dubbed a "California Parachute" was approved, a cubical open-rear tail box outer surface with eight radial fins inside of it, four angled at 45 degrees and four perpendicular to the line of fall holding the outer square-fin box to the bomb's rear end. [21] In drop tests in early weeks, the Fat Man missed its target by an average of 1,857 feet (566m), but this was halved by June as the bombardiers became more proficient with it. [25]
