Start using the cream at the first sign of infection (for instance, when you first feel your skin tingling) and continue to use it for five days. This is often sufficient time for the sore to heal but you can continue to use the cream for a further five days if needed. Remember to wash and dry your hands before and after using aciclovir, to prevent spreading any infection. As the aciclovir plasma concentrations following topical application are below the limit of detection, no pharmacokinetic studies are available on topical aciclovir. Therefore, the following data is based on the data after oral or intravenous administration. In internationally accepted standard tests the systemic administration of Aciclovir did not produce embryotoxic or teratogenic effects in rabbits, rats or mice. Advise patients to wash their hand before and after applying the cream, and to avoid unnecessary rubbing of the lesions or touching them with a towel, to avoid aggravating or transferring the infection. This would not be expected to result in any adverse effect in breastfed infants. Aciclovir is an antiviral cream used to treat herpes simplex. Herpes simplex virus or HSV for short is a highly contagious virus that once contracted, usually before the age of 10, lies inactive within the body. HSV can then become active from time to time, usually if you are run down. HSV is very common it is believed that 7 in 10 people carry the virus but for some people it might remain inactive.
