If anyone knows of any great European transfer companies that are good at providing car seats please let me know in the comments.

To see which child car seats have soared through our lab tests, read our Group 2/3 car seat reviews. This child car seat has passed the regulatory tests required by ECE R44/04 to be sold as a group 1 car seat suitable for children weighing 9-18kg, which is one to four years of age. The Trunki Boostapak is a reasonably portable option for a 4yo though the Bubble Bum does much the same thing and is even smaller to carry. Babies and children can vary wildly in terms of size, so its better to use height or weight as a guide for what car seat they should be in, rather than age. We recommend the BubbleBum as our kids preferred it for comfort, it scored highest on the safety scores we read and it was the cheapest. Some infant carriers are still sold as Group 0, which only fits up to 9kg or 10kg but these tend to be very rare these days.

This All Stages Universal i-Size, ISOFIX ERF car seat has had extensive crash and safety testing as part of the latest R129 / i-Size standard and is an all-stages car seat that can be used from 40cm (birth) - 150cm (12 years approx. If you're using an i-Size seat, your little one will need to stay rear-facing until they’re at least 15 months old and 76cm in height. It’s not a lightweight option, so I doubt I’d take it on my travels, but I’m not convinced many Group 1 seats are particularly good for that – finding a lightweight Group 1 car seat that also ranks well for safety seemed impossible, certainly to get something genuinely lightweight enough to take on a plane but still score well enough to use every day. When it comes to travel legislation across Europe, there are two safety standards that you should be aware of: R44 and R129/i-Size.

Updated to add: This year we have used the Bubblebum for my 8 year old daughter on a 2 week holiday in America and for a trip to Iceland whilst there and it really helped position the seatbelt better for her and gave us reassurance. Isofix is a type of car seat base that securely locks your car seat into your car, keeping it safe and secure whilst you travel.

Unfortunately, while it’s suitable for babies over 9kg and nine months like Minnie, it instantly became apparently it wasn’t going to work. BubbleBum is the only inflatable booster seat with a patented system to guarantee stability and comfort on every journey.

The seat can be rear-facing from birth until your child is 105cm tall, or forward-facing from 15 months to 105cm (around four years old). To remove stubborn stains, spray soap and water solution onto the seat and let it sit for 15-20 minutes before blotting with a clean sponge. Choosing whether to forward- or rear-face your little one's car seat depends on their age, height and weight. Bear in mind that your baby needs to be in a rear-facing seat at least until they're over 9kg, or over 15 months old if you have an i-Size seat.
