About this deal

So, what are you to do with all of this data? Clearly, the actual BTUs (given by the SACC rating) is much less than the commonly specified traditional BTUs for every portable AC unit on the market. There is not one model on the market that has as much SACC BTUs as it does traditional BTUs. Our recommendation is three-fold In some ways, the Frigidaire beats its pricier competitors. Unlike the LG, it has a sleep mode, in addition to the usual 3-in-1 functionality, eco mode, and 24h timer. The least efficient units get their rated capacity cut in half. There are several units on the market with a SACC of 4,000 BTUs that are sold as 8,000 BTU air conditioners. Inverter compressors are also much quieter than regular ones. The U-shape also allows the window pane to slide between the compressor and the indoor unit, forming a natural sound barrier.

This leaves us with only three critical factors that you can look at to distinguish between the best and worst models in each respective size category:

EcoSilent8

Every portable AC unit, no matter if it’s a 8,000 or 14,000 BTU unit, has three modes – cooling, drying (dehumidification with no cooling), and fan (air moving with no cooling) only. Most units have three fan speeds, a timer, and can be adjusted over the same desired temperature range (between 60° F and 90° F). In the noise department, the LG can’t compete with the Midea’s inverter compressor, but it’s no slouch. The running noise is fairly quiet — as long as you support the unit properly. Midea U sets itself apart from its competition with two things. First, it has an inverter compressor. Second, it features a U-shaped design instead of the traditional box form factor.

Combine the low power consumption with a reasonable price tag, and you have a portable air conditioning unit that provides a lot of value. It performed admirably in our testing, maintaining its lowest temperature nearly 70% of the time. The other small units we tested -- the Frigidaire FHPC082AC1 and the Whirlpool WHAP131BWC -- weren't able to keep up with the GE unit in this test. It also did well in the second test, where we see how consistently the unit maintains a set temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Again the GE APCD08JALW took first place. We discuss our test procedures in depth later in this article if you want to learn more about the process. The Frigidaire is louder than the LG, so you might want to keep it out of your bedroom. I also noticed bugs somehow managing to make their way in through the unit.Protect your Air Conditioner against the cost and hassle of unexpected failure and give yourself some added peace of mind with one of our great value extended warranties! As you can see, all the models in the list have a specified cooling capacity of 8,000 BTUs by the old standard. By the new standard, seasonally adjusted cooling capacity (SACC) ranges from as high as 5,500 BTU all the way down to as little as 4,000 BTU.

If it breaks we'll fix it, if it develops a fault we'll get it working again. Well instruct either the manufacturer or a certified repair centre to repair it. As is Frigidaire tradition, though, the mounting kit is a mystery. I got it with the unit, but the manual states the side panels and other parts are “optional.” Your box may or may not have the parts. Like Midea U, HomeLabs also has Wi-Fi capabilities. It can pair with your phone or Alexa, allowing you to control it from anywhere. The cooling effect slowed down significantly, but hey — I pushed the machine way past its limits, and it still did the job. I also noticed that my unit collected some water inside it. That’s intended as the AC recycles the water to cool itself, but mosquitoes love that puddle. In the noise department, this unit isn’t particularly special. At full blast, my sound meter detected 58 dB of noise, which is admittedly fairly loud. Are you scared after reading all those horror stories online about portable air conditioners that break after a few weeks? Shinco SPF1-08C can put your mind at rest. While portable air conditioners are among the least energy efficient type, they are more energy efficient than central air since they only cool a single room at a time. With enough BTUs, the right positioning, and open doors, however, one might be able to cool multiple rooms. Still, look for an Energy Star-rating for efficient operation. Shinco doesn't have auto-evaporation like SereneLife, but in my medium-humidity region, I only had to drain the Shinco once a week in AC mode. MeacoCool 8,000BTU portable air conditioner for use in the home or the office to provide personal cooling in rooms of around 15-25m².

Like the Frigidaire, the remote has a portable thermostat that can automatically adjust the unit based on your location. I wanted to see just what this unit is capable of and tried it out in larger spaces than it’s intended for. To my surprise, it kept even a 450-sq-ft tolerable. Wait, there's more! Midea U comes with a built-in Wi-Fi module that allows it to connect to your smartphone or a voice control unit, like Alexa or Google Assistant. Whether you want to maintain the temperature in a certain room or cool down fast, this offering from Frigidaire has you covered. Meant to cool and control rooms up to 350 square feet, you’ll notice other benefits as well. With the built-in filter, this product will trap harmful bacteria, effectively removing them from the room. Because of this, your room will feel crisper and smell fresher. Fully programmable, the timer inside the unit makes it capable to be turned on and off in 30-minute intervals. It also serves as a dehumidifier, able to dehumidify rooms at a rate of 2.8 pints per hour. Feeling too lazy to get up to change the AC? Frigidaire has you covered there as well. This machine is fully operational with a remote control. I wouldn’t use this unit as your sole heater, but it does a decent job of helping keep the autumn chill out of your garage.Setting the B+D unit up was so easy that I didn’t even touch the instructions until I had it running.
