The decision as to which FPS setting you choose will come down to your preferences, as well as being based upon the battery life available and the amount of storage space you want your clips to monopolise. 1080p clips shot at 60fps will be much larger than those shot at 30fps, and you can make your memory card go even further by choosing a lower 720p capture resolution if you wish.
Generally, you can expect around 15 months battery life for photos (taking around 60 pictures every 24 hours) and about 2 months for video (taking around 20 videos every 24 hours). This will obviously vary depending on how active and how long each video is, and if there are more night shots than day. In the past, many people get confused with the megapixel rating trail camera manufacturers advertise. Companies inflate the mpxl rating to attract eyes to their products. They do this through interpolation, which digitally adds megapixels to a photo without actually improving the picture. The build quality and overall design of the camera is excellent and has improved further, with a forward-facing colour screen to help with set up and so you can review images/videos without dismounting the camera in the field. However, the benefits are clear and definitely worth it, as the nighttime images are of high quality, and Browning did not have to use a dedicated nighttime lens. The Browning Recon Force Elite HP4 offers 22 MP still pictures (interpolated), 1920x1080 resolution video with sound, a 2" colour display, 0.2s trigger speed, time-lapse mode, timer, up to 80ft flash range, low-glow LEDs, multi-shot mode up to 8 photos per detection or video up to 120s (20s at night). 41 degree field of view. Takes 8 AA batteries (can use rechargeable) and up to 512GB SD card. 5" x 4" x 2.5". 2 year warranty. While this is not a dealbreaker for us, 4K videos are commonly found with cameras at this price range.
When it comes to detection ranges and reliability, it’s a bit of a muddier picture. Detection has so many variables – size of the subject (a hedgehog will have to be closer to the camera to trigger it compared to a red deer!), weather conditions, temperature, speed of the subject, batteries used and power remaining, the settings you use on the trail camera… so its worth bearing in mind that ‘100ft detection range’ is not a definitive statement, on any trail camera.
