Originating from Earth’s twin planet Mondas, the Cybermen were originally just like us in appearance, wholly organic humanoids who began to experiment in ways of self-preservation when they realised their planet’s resources were dying and their lifespans were shortening. Mondasian scientists, with machinery years ahead of Earth technology, began to implant artificial parts into bodies, until these parts started to replace vital organs. With cybernetic parts added to their brains, they started to lose their humanoid emotions and became cold, calculating and logic led cyborgs. In trying to save their race, they had become monsters. The next figure portrays a Cyberman from the 1969 story The Invasion, the fourth and final time the Second Doctor encounters their race. Again, the costumes had been modified from their previous appearance a year earlier, this time adding ‘ear muff’ type shapes to the sides of their helmets and one-piece silver wet suits to their bodies. In this story, the Doctor discovers the Cybermen have been hiding in late 20th century Earth, working with partially cyber-enhanced human Tobias Vaughn to bring their invasion fleet to destroy Earth. With the help of the newly formed UNIT, led by Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart, their plans are once again thwarted. 1975 Vogan War Cyberman The final story of Doctor Who’s tenth season returned a classic design to the screen – the Mondasian Cybermen! How could you make the Cybermen both frightening and imposing for the 21st century? The answer was to cover them head to toe in body armour, to feature them en masse as relentless, marching, unstoppable killers.

Unlike the subtle changes to the Daleks over the history of the programme, the Cybermen have undergone several major re-designs over the years, but the retention of the silver colour scheme, round eyeholes and the iconic handlebars on the helmet is present on every design. The Figures After being warned about the Lone Cyberman, the Doctor and her friends came face-to-face with it at the Villa Diodati. The pure nightmare fuel that is the Lone Cyberman - real name Ashad - had only been partly converted, with his human face still partially exposed. Despite being part human, Ashad hated all organic life and wanted to restore the Cybermen to their former glory. All he needed to make that happen? For the Doctor to surrender the Cyberium, an AI that contained every scrap of data about the Cybermen! Their first story was also the First Doctor’s last, as this was the adventure that introduced regeneration… as well as the Second Doctor. Product Enterprise produced various talking Cybermen including an all over matt silver finish, a Chrome effect Cyberman and Cyberleader and a Stealth Cyberman. You’d think being driven by logic, the Cybermen would have worked out that plots from space stations don’t end well for them, but no. The target: the “planet of gold”, Voga. The space station: Nerva. In this story, it was revealed the Cybermen were fatally vulnerable to gold, so they planned to destroy Voga. This key weakness would be vital in several of the Doctor’s following encounters with the Cybermen.

Many other variations and novelties have been made. Shown below are the Character 12″ Cyberman and Controller, Bubble bath, room guard and voice changer helmet. Please note that the figure images shown are pre-production but changes in the final sculpt are minimal. When the Doctor next encountered the Cybermen, they’d opted for a more covert form of invasion. Targeting the weather control station on the Moon, they infected the station’s crew with a virus, softening up the base to make it easier to conquer. Their target was the Gravitron, the device that controlled the Earth’s weather. With it, they intended to destroy the surface of the Earth – and everyone on it. Unfortunately for the Cybermen, the Doctor was on hand to put a stop to their scheme. Travelling to the aftermath of the Cyber Wars, Ashad engaged his plan to restore the full might of the Cybermen. As Team TARDIS set out to stop him, little did Ashad know that there was another force at work. The Master had returned, and he had his own ideas about the future of the Cyber race. He offered them the chance to convert the Time Lords – and acquire their ability to regenerate. The CyberMasters were born!

Despite being their first appearance, The Tenth Planet doesn’t show the origins of the Cybermen. That comes much later (sort of), but also - obviously - before. The joys of a show about time travel! In their debut, the Cybermen’s home-world of Mondas – Earth’s twin – had returned to our solar system, after aeons spent drifting in space. The Cybermen were caught in a race for control of the Nemesis statue, which returned to Earth every 25 years. Standing in their way were a group of Nazis, a time-travelling aristocrat from the 17th Century, as well as the Doctor and Ace. The race was on… Scificollector produced a superb 5″ figure with stand which is shown below (centre) along with the Cards Inc bust, Corgi, Micro universe, Time squad, keyring and Money box versions.

How it all began– well not quite. The first Cyberman figure was manufactured by Dennis Fisher (Mego) and is now extremely rare. Trapped in the bowels of a vast colony ship for centuries, the engineering crew of Floor 1056 resorted to drastic measures to survive, slowly converting themselves into a new kind of cybernetic life. Even when their “upgrades” began causing terrible pain, these new Cybermen could not stop – they simply installed emotional inhibitors, to keep themselves from caring about it. Unfortunately, they didn’t last for long. One squad was massacred by a Raston Warrior Robot, and the other by a Gallifreyan trap that they were lured into by the Master. The Cybermen, small in number, set out to conquer other organic beings, turning whole races into Cybermen, and constantly tried to upgrade themselves to stronger, deadlier versions. The story featured the seventh Doctor and Ace visiting England in 1988, where they encounter three rival faction groups: the Cybermen, Lady Peinforte, and a Neo-Nazi group, who are all attempting to take control of a statue made of living metal, originally created on Gallifrey. This statue, created by President Rassilon, was designed to be the ultimate defence for the Time Lord planet. The Cybermen fleet are eventually wiped out by the power of the statue. 2006 Cybus Industries Cyberman This two-part adventure re-introduced the Cybermen as non-extraterrestrial beings from a parallel universe on an alternate Earth, created by Cybus Industries headed by the sinister John Lumic, closely associated with the government. Lumic’s scheme was to convert the population of London into Cybermen, literally upgrading humanity by placing human brains into metal exoskeletons to create an army of powerful, unstoppable machines.
