The chapters are themed around different activities that take place in, beside or near the sea, such as beachcombing, freediving, watching wildlife or surfing. These interactions are interspersed with recollections and meditative musings about what the sea means to him and his family as he tries to answer the question: why it is that some of us are unable resist the force of the tide on our souls?

Menmuir writes that if you ask ten people what they see when they look at the coastline you’ll get eleven different answers. His book transformed a stretch of coastline I thought I knew - I grew up on the so called ‘badlands’ between St Agnes and Portreath - as I read, I saw it with fresh eyes. From surfing to beach-combing to collecting cowrie shells he changed the landscape for me and remade it with everyday magic. As a species, although our behaviours have an impact on every ecosystem on Earth, we humans are able to inhabit just 5 per cent of those ecosystems. The other 95 per cent, the oceans, are, for the most part, off limits to us. We are just visitors here." After this judgment, there were no more cases of openly admitted cannibal killings on board of British or American ships. This does not necessarily mean that they no longer occurred — but the sailors had certainly learned that more discretion was now required, since the custom had effectively been declared unlawful in the Mignonette case. In the 1890s, there were two more highly suspicious cases of maritime hunger cannibalism, but the survivors asserted that the eaten had died a natural death. Adding creatures is a great way to improve this drawing, but you can also add some other details. For example, we think that some palm trees would be a beautiful addition to the image! In the illustration, you will see that we used the color blue on the ocean and the color white on the edge of the ocean. Then, we used light brown to color the sand. This specific custom, which was also known as "the delicate question" or "the proper tradition of the sea", specified that in case of disaster, when there was not enough food for the survivors, corpses could be eaten. If "there were no bodies available for consumption, lots were drawn to determine who would be sacrificed to provide food for the others". As long as the lottery was fair, giving everyone an equal risk of dying to become food for the others, this was considered "entirely legal" and justified by the circumstances. "On the whole, sailors and the general public knew and accepted [this] protocol of cannibalism to survive ship disasters." [3] The 2019 movie Harpoon, in which three friends are stranded aboard their yacht at sea, references both the incident aboard the Mignonette and the Edgar Allan Poe story.
