The main story is thin and cliche with the bad guy being marked as bad guy from his first appearance. Most importantly the story doesn’t start until 45% into the book - way too much waffle first. And then the police is behaving like they know and do nothing - the SoC (called here CSI) people do nothing, pathologist serves as the only one working, no tech support to help with computer/communication equipment - all is solved and done by DCI Grimm (who used to be in Paras, which the author informs us approximately 7618 times ;) ) Grimm Up North is the terrific debut crime novel from award-winning author David J. Gatward. Perfect for fans of L. J. Ross, J. D. Kirk, Simon McCleave, Alex Smith, J. M. Dalgliesh, J. E. Mayhew, and J. R. Ellis. I love this audiobook, and I can’t wait to plunge into the next one. I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who likes mysteries set in the English countryside. There is some violence and a few bloody details, but just enough to describe the situation (not too much). There is some swearing, but it feels natural for emphasis.

Harry is a man that prefers to work his cases on his own as he believes he is more effective that way. Nonetheless, like many genius detectives, he is not a particularly likable person. He had been wounded by IED while he was in the Parachute Regiment and this gives him an intimidating and severe look. When he arrives at his new work station, he despairs as it is a sleepy outpost with sleepy villages, lots of sheep, and rolling hills that he does not believe could conjure up a major investigation. In the village, almost everyone knows everyone and the biggest crimes reported to local law enforcement are sheep stealing. Wensleydale does not even have a police station and he learns that he will be based at a small room in the community centre. But then his first day gets very interesting when a girl on her way to school goes missing. This results in an interesting chain of events with twists and trunks that are enough to make one dizzy. As the first book, it naturally introduces the recurring cast, all of whom turn out to be pretty credible cops, considering Harry's expectations, and you have to wonder if the BBC might want to give this a look. After all, they've already got the sets built...

The writing is overly descriptive and needs solid editing. There are several paragraphs of Harry driving and admiring countryside!!! Jeez! One sentence would do. It’s a police procedural, not XIX realistic novel! Language, sentence openers, syntax is very repetitive and I had a feeling like all the description only served as a filler. It's Grim Up North" is a song by The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu (The JAMs). The song was originally released as a limited edition "Club Mix" in December 1990 with Pete Wylie on vocals. A re-recorded version with Bill Drummond on vocals was released commercially in October 1991. These recordings were the first releases by Drummond and his creative partner Jimmy Cauty under the JAMs moniker since the 1988 compilation album Shag Times, and the last under that name; in the meantime they had operated as the Timelords and the KLF. The 1991 single release reached No. 10 on the UK Singles Chart and entered the top 10 in Denmark and Finland. This seems like a harsh rate, but I treat one star as meaning 'Did not like', and being honest, I did not like it, though there was definitely something in the bones of it that did work for me. I have read a couple of books in this series, and I enjoyed them so much I decided to start the series from the beginning. I am pleased that I did. Grimm Up North did not disappoint; I engaged with this book from the start. I love David J. Gatward's portrayal of his characters and how they interact throughout this book. Gimm Up North is well-written and researched by David J. Gatward. I love David J. Gatward's description of the sittings of Grimm Up North, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book plot.
